GOVERNMENT CAMP, Ore. -- Mary Owen, a 23-year-old woman who disappeared after going hiking alone on Mount Hood, was found alive on Sandy Glacier by a National Guard Helicopter Saturday morning, officials said.

Owen was reportedly taken by helicopter to Legacy Emanuel Hospital with some injuries and frostbite, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.?

Owen was found after a second day of searching by rescue teams from around the area. She was reported missing at 8:15 p.m. Thursday, according to Deputy Bryon O'Neil of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office. She had written in an email to a friend Sunday that she planned to go hiking, but had not been heard from since then.?

Deputies called Timberline Lodge Thursday and the manager on duty said Owen's vehicle, a white 1998 Toyota 4-Runner was parked in the lot, O'Neil said. Investigators said the vehicle looked like it had been parked there for some time.?

"Ms. Owen's backpack is still in her vehicle so she may be short on supplies," O'Neil said. "She is an experienced hiker who has in the past hiked the Pacific Coast Trail from Mexico to Canada."?

Anyone who may have seen her since Saturday was asked to call CCSO at (503) 655-8211 or send an email to Sergeant Sean Collinson.?

(AP) ? Hundreds of patients of an Oklahoma oral surgeon accused of unsanitary practices showed up at a health clinic Saturday, looking to find out whether they were exposed to hepatitis or the virus that causes AIDS.

Letters began going out Friday to 7,000 patients who had seen Dr. W. Scott Harrington during the past six years, warning them that poor hygiene at his clinics created a public health hazard. The one-page letter said how and where to seek treatment but couldn't explain why Harrington's allegedly unsafe practices went on for so long.

Testing for hepatitis B, hepatitis C and the virus that causes AIDS began at 10 a.m. Saturday, but many arrived early and stood through torrential downpours. The Tulsa Health Department said 420 people were tested Saturday at its North Regional Health and Wellness Center. Screenings resume Monday morning.

Kari Childress, 38, showed up at 8:30 a.m., mainly because she was nervous.

"I just hope I don't have anything," said Childress, who had a tooth extracted at one of Harrington's two clinics five months ago. "You trust and believe in doctors to follow the rules, and that's the scariest part."

Inspectors found a number of problems at the doctor's clinics in Tulsa and suburban Owasso, according to the state Dentistry Board, which filed a 17-count complaint against Harrington pending an April 19 license revocation hearing. According to the complaint, needles were reinserted into drug vials after being used on patients, expired drugs were found in a medicine cabinet and dental assistants, not the doctor, administered sedatives to patients.

One patient, Orville Marshall, said he didn't meet Harrington until after he had two wisdom teeth pulled about five years ago at the Owasso clinic. A nurse inserted the IV for his anesthesia; Harrington was there when Marshall came to.

"It's just really scary. It makes you doubt the whole system, especially with how good his place looked," said Marshall, 37.

An instrument set reserved for use on patients with infectious diseases was rusty, preventing its effective sterilization, and the office autoclave ? a pressurized cleaner ? was used improperly and hadn't been certified as effective in at least six years, according to the complaint.

Dr. Matt Messina, a Cleveland dentist and a consumer adviser for the American Dental Association, said creating a safe and hygienic environment is "one of the fundamental requirements" before any dental procedure can be performed.

"It's not hard. It just takes effort," he said.

Weekly autoclave testing can be performed for less than $400 annually, according to the website of the Autoclave Testing Services of Pearl River, New York.

Autoclaves typically can be purchased for $1,000 to $8,000, depending on their size and features. And an average dental practice can expect to pay more than $40,000 a year in equipment, tools and supplies alone, according to several dental organizations.

Attempts to reach Harrington have been unsuccessful. No one answered the door Thursday at his Oklahoma home, which property records show is worth more than $1 million. His practice a few miles away, in a tony section of Tulsa where plastic surgeons operate and locals congregate at bistros and stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue, has a fair-market value of around $851,000.

Property and tax records show Harrington owns another residence in Carefree, Ariz., in an area of upscale homes tucked into in the boulder-strewn mountains north of Phoenix.

Nobody was at home Saturday at the low-slung, 1950s-style vacation home, across from the Boulders Resort. Neighbors said they had seen a lot of activity at the home in recent weeks.

Harrington's malpractice lawyer, Jim Secrest II, did not respond to phone messages left Thursday or Friday. A message at Harrington's Tulsa office said it was closed and an answering service referred callers to the Tulsa Health Department.

Suzy Horton, an old friend of Harrington's, said she can't believe the allegations about the man who removed two of her teeth in the early '90s. Horton's ex-husband sold Harrington his home in Carefree ? a home where she once lived.

"I've been to dentists my whole life, so I know what a professional office looks like," Horton, who now lives in Phoenix, said in a telephone interview. "His was just as professional as anybody."

Horton hasn't seen Harrington in years, but she said he has sent her a Christmas card and wreath every year since her 1999 divorce.

"It was a long time ago, so I suppose anything can change, but the kind of person they're portraying in the news is not the kind of person who sends you a Christmas" card, she said.

On the eve of Passover, which begins in Israel with tonight?s traditional seder meal, the?shuk?is jammed with everyone from hippie tourists to religious Jews with black hats and tight side curls. Amid the shouts of vendors and the swish of plastic bags, the ultra-Orthodox and ultra-modern jockey for everything from live fish to fresh garlic stalks to rich Israeli cheese and artisan breads. Nearly everything (except the bread) is labeled ?Kosher for Passover.?

?It?s the new and old noodling together. I love the feel of the past and the progression of the future,? says Yochanan Lambiase, a fifth-generation chef who fairly glides through the aisles of Machane Yehuda as he explores the magnificent palette with a small group of journalists. ?That?s very much Israeli society.??

While most of the shoppers here are Jewish, it?s no longer just Jews who are buying food grown and packaged in accordance with Jewish law, especially in North America.

Vegetarians, vegans, Hindus, Seventh-Day Adventists, and even Muslims have been increasingly choosing kosher products, driving a 64 percent growth in the US kosher market from 2003 to 2008, when it was estimated to be worth $12.5 billion. Since then the increase has been more gradual, but kosher foods remain one of the most steadily growing sectors of the expanding ethnic food market in North America, according to a March 2012 Agri-Trade Service report.?

?I feel the kosher food industry has reached a pinnacle, and now we have to move it into the 21st?century,? says chef Lambiase, who established the world?s first kosher culinary institute in the world here in Jerusalem in 2004 and is co-launching a new tour of the Mahane Yehuda market with?guide Cliff Churgin.

Mr. Lambiase sees himself as a pioneer of sorts. He was raised in a secular British home, and his kosher career was sparked by a love of cooking rather than of Jewish law, which forbids the consumption of pork and shellfish; requires that meat and dairy dishes be kept separate; and has strict rules governing the slaughter of animals.

But he quickly became drawn in by the religious aspects. ?Kosher isn?t anything to do with physical health, it has to do with spiritual health,? says Lambiase, who follows the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, a Hasidic branch of Judaism.?Today, he sees other newly observant Jews as playing a role in bringing kosher food to the gastronomic attention of the world.

?I think there?s been a huge revival in Jewish religiosity over the past 10 years and ? Jewish people normally know what good food is and they?re not going to take [their non-Jewish friends] out for gefilte fish.??

He heads back to his culinary institute, journalists in tow. We are more adept with our pens than with chef's knives, but he and fellow kosher chef Zev Beck are patient.

Despite the cilantro flying, tomatoes squirting on chef Beck?s jeans, and a stray garlic bulb rolling under the stainless-steel tables, after a couple of hours the rich aroma of fresh bread,?shakshoukas?(poached eggs in a spicy tomato base), and broiled eggplants garnished with homemade tahina wafts through the school.

If Lambiase and Mr. Beck can teach even journalists to be kosher cooks, their prospects for expanding the global ranks of kosher chefs look promising.

Proximity to coal-tar-sealed pavement raises risk of cancer, study finds

Mar. 28, 2013 ? People living near asphalt pavement sealed with coal tar have an elevated risk of cancer, according to a study in the journal Environmental Science and Technology. Much of this calculated excess risk results from exposures in children, age six or younger, to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from the sealant.

"The increased cancer risk associated with coal-tar-sealed asphalt (CSA) likely affects a large number of people in the U.S. Our results indicate that the presence of coal-tar-based pavement sealants is associated with significant increases in estimated excess lifetime cancer risk for nearby residents," said E. Spencer Williams, Ph.D., principal author of the study and Baylor University assistant research scientist at the Center for Reservoir and Aquatic Systems Research in Baylor's College of Arts & Sciences.

Researchers from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, and the in Austin, Texas, are the first to report on the potential human health effects of PAHs in settled house dust and soil in living spaces and soil adjacent to parking lots sealed with coal-tar-based products.

"Exposure to these compounds in settled house dust is a particularly important source of risk for children younger than six years of age, as they are expected to ingest this material at higher rates," Williams said. "This indicates that the use of coal-tar-based pavement sealants magnifies aggregate exposures to PAHs in children and adults in residences adjacent to where these products are used and is associated with human health risks in excess of widely accepted standards."

Data on PAHs in settled house dust used for this analysis were published previously by the same authors. In that study, settled house dust and parking lot dust were sampled for 23 ground-floor apartments in Austin, Texas. The parking lot surfaces adjacent to the apartments were coal-tar-sealed asphalt, asphalt-based sealant over asphalt pavement, or unsealed concrete. Concentrations of PAHs were 25 times higher in house dust in residences adjacent to coal-tar-sealed pavement compared to those with other pavement types. "This study was the first to find a strong association between a product or a behavior and PAHs in house dust," said Barbara Mahler, the USGS research hydrologist who oversaw the study.

For this study, doses and risk associated with residences adjacent to unsealed asphalt lots were considered relative to those adjacent to (CSA) parking lots. Benzo(a)pyrene concentrations in CSA-affected settled house dust were high relative to those reported in most parts of the U.S. where coal-tar-based sealcoat is not used (California and Arizona). Data for PAHs in coal-tar-sealed asphalt-affected soils and unsealed asphalt-affected soils are available from samples from New Hampshire and suburban Chicago.

The analysis did not consider exposure to the dust on the pavement itself, which has PAH concentrations 10s to 100s of times higher than those in house dust or soil, or inhalation of air over sealed pavement. "Over time, about half of the PAHs in the sealcoat are released into the air, and concentrations in air are extremely high, particularly in the hours to days after application," said Peter Van Metre, USGS research hydrologist and author of two papers on volatilization of PAHs from sealcoat.

Sealcoat is a black, shiny substance sprayed or painted on the asphalt pavement of parking lots, driveways, and playgrounds to improve appearance and protect the underlying asphalt. An estimated 85 million gallons of coal-tar-based sealant are applied to pavement each year, primarily east of the Continental Divide in the U.S. and parts of Canada. Coal-tar-based pavement sealants are 15 to 35 percent coal-tar pitch, which has been classified as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Over time, the dried sealant is worn away from pavement surfaces, and the resulting mobile dust particles can be transported into nearby homes.

"Although the analysis presented here is based on a limited dataset, the results indicate that biomonitoring might be warranted to characterize the exposure of children and adults to PAHs associated with coal-tar-based pavement sealant," Williams said. "Further investigation is also needed into the impacts of coal-tar-based pavement sealants on PAH concentrations in indoor and outdoor environments."

Stock futures drop on renewed euro zone worries

By Angela Moon

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stock futures fell on Wednesday, after a robust rally a day earlier, as soft demand at an Italian debt auction sparked fresh jitters over the financial health of the euro zone.

The Dow climbed more than 100 points Tuesday to another record close, and the S&P 500 rose to within striking distance of its all-time closing high, on optimism about the economy.

"I suspect that we are seeing institutions reposition their positions and the new worries from Europe are causing a bit of technical hiccup in the market today after a solid day yesterday," said Peter Cardillo of Rockwell Global Capital in New York.

Italy paid more to borrow over five years than it has since October at an auction Wednesday as lack of progress in forming a new government and worries about Cyprus's bailout hit demand. The treasury sold $5 billion of the new June 2018 bond at a yield of 3.65 percent, two days after an election in which no party won enough seats to govern.

Cyprus is finalizing capital control measures to prevent a run on its banks by depositors anxious about their savings, after wealthy depositors were penalized under a rescue package agreed with international lenders. Cypriot banks are due to reopen on Thursday.

European stocks slid and the euro currency fell to a four-month low against the dollar on Wednesday. <.eu/>

U.S. investors awaited data on pending home sales for February, due at 10:00 a.m. EDT (1400 GMT).

S&P 500 futures fell 8.1 points and were below fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures lost 64 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures fell 13.25 points.

As Boeing works to regain permission for its 787 Dreamliner to resume flights, the company faces what could be a costly new challenge - a temporary ban on some of the long-distance, trans-ocean journeys the jet was intended to fly. The stock fell 0.3 percent in premarket trade.

BlackBerry will be in focus after data released Tuesday showed short interest in the stock is at record levels and has more than doubled over the course of the last year. Shares were down 0.4 percent in premarket trading.

T-Mobile USA said Tuesday it will start selling Apple Inc's iPhone on April 12, making it the last of the big national U.S. operators to sell the popular smartphone. The No. 4 U.S. mobile provider hopes the device can help stem customer losses.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc said Tuesday it is "probable" the company will incur losses relating to allegations that its representatives had bribed officials in Mexico to speed up expansion there. The stock was off 0.5 percent in premarket trading.

U.S. prosecutors are examining whether JPMorgan Chase & Co fully alerted authorities to suspicions about fraudster Bernard Madoff, the New York Times reported, citing people with direct knowledge of the matter. The stock was off 0.8 percent in premarket trade.

WADA backs HGH test against 'extremist' NFLPA

By STEPHEN WILSON

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:29 p.m. ET March 27, 2013

LONDON (AP) - The World Anti-Doping Agency has defended its test for human growth hormone and accused the NFL players union of being "extremist" for questioning its validity.

WADA director general David Howman tells The Associated Press the test for HGH was endorsed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in its ruling Tuesday in the case of an Estonian cross-country skier.

The court lifted the three-year suspension imposed by the International Ski Federation on two-time Olympic cross-country champion Andrus Veerpalu for use of HGH, citing "procedural flaws." But CAS said it believed Veerpalu did take HGH and backed the testing method.

Howman says "there is no question as to the validity of the test."

The NFL players union said the CAS ruling "validates the players' demands for scientific validity, full due process rights, and a transparent system."

Howman says "I would expect the players association to take a stance which is extremist which is the way they've operated the last few years."

Chef Pets | Chefs As Animals | The Braiser

The Braiser Zoo Of Dream Pets began with our friends over at Styleite, when a former editor kept a small fish on her desk named Karl Lagerfish. As time went on and The Braiser popped into existence, we wondered: what chef fish would become friends with Karl Lagerfish? For that matter, why would we have to limit it to fish? Why not animals of all sorts?

And thus, The Dream Zoo was born.

Much like our imaginations, our Dream Zoo is limitless, and this is only part one out of a 468 part series of animals we wish we?d owned. Cuddles! Cuddles for EVERYONE!

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Video Music Awards are taking a road trip to Brooklyn.

MTV's showcase awards show is traditionally held in Los Angeles or Manhattan.

This year the show will be held Aug. 25 at the new Barclays Center, home of the Brooklyn Nets and the site of recent Rolling Stones and Jay-Z multi-night concerts.

MTV will celebrate 30 years of the VMAs this year. From Kanye West and Taylor Swift to the Madonna-Britney Spears-Christina Aguilera kiss, the show has become known more for its pop culture moments than the winners of its signature Moonman trophies.

The VMAs were last held in New York in 2009 and have been in Los Angeles since.

Junk food fight heats up

New York's big soda ban goes down. more battles ahead.

By Schuyler Velasco,?Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor / March 25, 2013

The fight between food purveyors and health advocates over junk food is getting intense. From the successful campaign against trans fats to San Francisco's ban on toys in McDonald's Happy Meals to first lady Michelle Obama's campaign against childhood obesity, it's clear that makers of so-called junk foods face a widening public relations battle.

In the latest round, the food industry notched a big win. Within hours of New York City's ban on big sugary drinks going into effect March 11, a New York State Supreme Court justice struck it down. The judge blasted the city for regulatory overreach, because it didn't consult the city council. He also called the rule "arbitrary and capricious," because it didn't apply to all establishments in the city or all high-calorie sweetened drinks.

More battles lie ahead. After New York proposed controversial soda regulations last year, the mayor of Cambridge, Mass., weighed in on the desirability of doing the same in her city.

"Once you open the door a crack for these sorts of things, they don't go away," says Ruth MacDonald, chair of the food science and human nutrition department at Iowa State University in Ames. "There probably will be more of these things."

Some advocates liken the fight between food purveyors and health advocates to what happened decades ago with the major cigarette companies. Advocates finally got huge restrictions on smoking and cigarette sales despite furious industry lobbying. But there's one crucial difference: Food is a lot more complicated than tobacco. With sugar and fat so prevalent in food, "it gets just a little messy when you pinpoint which items you're not going to sell," says Dr. MacDonald.

The loopholes in the New York City ban were one factor in sinking it. For example, the city would have fined restaurants that served sugary drinks in cups containing more than 16 ounces. But convenience stores (including 7-Eleven and its "Big Gulp" drinks) were exempt because they are regulated by the state; so were drinks that were more than 50 percent dairy, like a milkshake.

The food industry cheered the ruling. "The court's decision upholds a principle that most of us already believe in ? freedom of choice," said the American Beverage Association, an industry group, in a statement. "Health cannot be legislated, mandated or decreed ? it must be learned and practiced by individuals."

The goal of such initiatives is to make people more conscious of their eating habits, rather than controlling them, counters Nancy Neiman Auerbach, a professor of food politics at Scripps College in Los Angeles. "You can unconsciously eat a massive bag of Cheetos; you can't do that with real foods. [Mayor Michael] Bloomberg's crusade is pointing out how difficult it is to attack this very broad-based health concern."

Mr. Bloomberg has vowed to continue the fight.

Progress will come on multiple fronts, adds MacDonald of Iowa State University, as government finds publicly acceptable ways to discourage unhealthy food habits, consumer awareness grows, and food companies adapt their products to meet public concerns.

Two die skydiving in Florida, said to be from Iceland

(Reuters) - Two skydivers from Iceland, one an instructor and the other a student, were killed in a skydiving jump on Saturday, Florida media reported.

The two men were part of a group of 22 skydivers who jumped from a plane in Zephyrhills, about 30 miles northeast of Tampa, according to the Tampa Tribune newspaper.

When only 20 of those who jumped returned, authorities launched a search and found the bodies of the two men a few hours later, Florida media said.

The two men were from Iceland, according to Skydive City, which planned the jump, the Tribune reported.

Their identities were not released.

A spokesman for the Pasco County, Florida Sheriff's Office could not be reached for comment.

A diplomatic star is born in Chinese first lady

BEIJING (AP) ? Glamorous new first lady Peng Liyuan has emerged as Chinese diplomacy's latest star, charming audiences and cutting a very different profile from her all-but invisible predecessors on her debut official visit abroad to Russia.

A celebrated performer on state television, Peng featured prominently in Sunday's Chinese media coverage of husband and President Xi Jinping's activities in Moscow. The visit is Xi's first since he assumed the presidency earlier this month.

Peng watched song and dance routines at a performing arts school on Saturday, but did not join in as some media reports had suggested she might. Xi's trip continues this week with stops in Tanzania, South Africa and Congo, during which Peng is expected to hold other public events.

An internationally popular first lady could help soften China's sometimes abrasive international image and mark a victory in its so-far unsuccessful struggle to win over global public opinion.

At the same time, she could boost the popularity of the country's new leadership at a time when citizens are feeling increasingly alienated and are fed up with the ruling class's corruption and regal airs.

In recent years, the wives of China's top officials have traditionally gone almost unseen at home and attracted little attention while accompanying their husbands on state visits abroad.

That was in part a negative reaction to Mao Zedong's wife, Jiang Qing, who was widely despised and later imprisoned for her role as leader of the radical Gang of Four, which mercilessly persecuted political opponents during the chaotic 1966-76 Cultural Revolution.

Recently retired Premier Wen Jiabao's wife, Zhang Peili, became known for her role in the country's gem trade and was never seen in public with her husband. Meanwhile, Bo Xilai, one of China's most ambitious politicians, was brought down in spectacular style last year following his wife's involvement in the murder of a British businessman, setting off the country's nastiest political scandal in years.

Women in general wield relatively little power at the top of the Chinese power structure, with just two sitting on the ruling Communist Party's 25-member decision-making Politburo.

Peng's emerging high profile appears to be an extension of Xi's own confidence as he consolidates his control on power and presses a more assertive role for China in global affairs, said Steve Tsang, director of the China Policy Institute at Britain's University of Nottingham. Her training as a singer and stage performer offers the perfect preparation for such a role, he said.

"Peng is projecting a certain poise and confidence that Xi himself is carrying and he doesn't need to worry about what other (politicians) might think of her," Tsang said.

Peng's image was splashed across Chinese newspapers over the weekend, shown descending arm-in-arm with Xi as they descended from their aircraft after arriving in Moscow on Friday. Her visit to the arts school was carried by state broadcaster CCTV on its main Sunday news broadcast and reported in national newspapers.

The popular Beijing News tabloid ran a full page of items on Peng's appearances on Sunday, alongside a photo of her arriving at a speech Xi gave Saturday, dressed in an elegant Chinese-style silk tunic and skirt.

"In her role as first lady on this visit abroad, Peng Liyuan is exhibiting China's soft power," the paper quoted Wang Fan, head the Institute of International Relations at China Foreign Affairs University, as saying. "As a singer and artist and a long-term advocate for poverty relief and other causes, Peng has an excellent public image."

Much of the coverage focused on her personal style, with a report on the mass-market sina.com website noting with satisfaction that the black leather clutch she paired with the outfit was made to order by a Chinese firm in the southwestern city of Chengdu, a flattering contrast with prominent Chinese female politicians scorned publicly for appearing decked head to toe in foreign designer brands.

"In practical terms, this is an important show of support for China's domestic industries, but in the larger sense, it should raise national self-respect and confidence," read a posting on China's popular Weibo microblogging service left by Lin Zhibo, Gansu provincial bureau chief of the Communist Party's flagship newspaper, People's Daily.

Chen Li, a real estate agent from the central city of Changsha, said Peng was well-known for her modest ways and calm, dignified manner.

"She's known to be elegant and fashionable, but she's also very low-key and doesn't seem arrogant in the way that you usually associate with the wives of top leaders," Chen said.

Peng, 50, largely retired from public life after Xi was made China's leader-in-waiting in 2007, but in recent years has won new acclaim as an ambassador for the World Health Organization. Among the issues she has worked on are tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS ? diseases that still carry considerable social stigma in China.

She also made headlines last year by appearing alongside Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates as part of a campaign to discourage smoking, a high-profile cause in a country where about two-thirds of men smoke.

Peng is Xi's second wife, and the two are separated in age by almost two decades. While Xi's father was a leading revolutionary and former vice-premier, making his son a member of the "red aristocracy," Peng comes from relatively humble origins and joined the People's Liberation Army when she was 18. The couple has one daughter, a student at Harvard who remains out of the limelight.

While sometimes described as a folk singer, Peng holds the rank of PLA major general and is best known for her stirring renditions of patriotic odes, often while wearing full dress uniform.

Although her rank is largely honorary, her military status could lead to awkward questions, said University of Nottingham's Tsang.

"Sooner or later, someone is going to ask whether that's completely normal, even if she doesn't have any real military or political ambitions," Tsang said.

Miley Cyrus had people going the other day when she posted this video of her Twerking….In a unicorn costume. I thought it was fun, cute, and gurl….Gurl has booty moves!!! Miley has been in the news non-stop these past few weeks with speculation that she and fiance Liam Hemsworth called off their engagement. He was out of the country and her engagement ring was off. There were rumors he cheated with maneater, January Jones, and people were literally going bananas over this. Miley denied, denied, denied the rumors, even saying that her ring was getting repaired. But they just didn’t die down. Finally she stopped denying and just moved on. She posted this video, Liam came home, and she is once again rocking out her ring. Haters gonna hate. In other Miley news, the former Disney starlet talked about the first single on her upcoming album, which she promises will be great. And you may be shocked to find out she collabed [...]

Internet fights over sexism and dongles, everybody loses

In a society that can?t stop throwing money at ?Family Guy? creator and ?We Saw Your Boobs? song provocateur Seth MacFarlane, how is it that the sophomoric comedy stylings of two guys at a tech conference has resulted in two lost jobs, DDoS attacks, death threats and the most misinformed discussion on sexism since ? um ? Seth MacFarlane?s ?We Saw Your Boobs??

The hubbub began March 17, at the PyCon developers Conference in Santa Clara, Calif., Adria Richards, developer evangelist for a software firm called SendGrid, overheard two dudes cracking wise, junior high style, over the tech terms ?forking? and ?dongles." So incensed was she by their untargeted doofery that she clutched her pearls on Twitter, broadcasting their picture and a description of the offense, and then followed up with a request that conference officials deal with it ... which, according to a PyCon blog post, they did:

The comments that were made were in poor taste, and individuals involved agreed, apologized, and no further actions were taken by the staff of PyCon 2013. No individuals were removed from the conference, no sanctions were levied.

Dudes chastised, righteous indignation addressed, end of story.

Psych!

Just like every other time someone attempts to right a minor wrong via social media, things got on ? very much like "Donkey Kong."

One of the two dude developers, an employee of PlayHaven, lost his job, as confirmed by the official PlayHaven blog. Then, compounding the original sin, Internet communities Hacker News, Reddit, and of course, Anonymous, unleashed their own very special brand of righteous indignation upon SendGrid and Richards' personal blog, shutting both down via DDoS attacks ... because that's what happens to websites that anger the Internet.

Richards, personally, became the subject of rape and death threats via Twitter ... because that's what happens to women who anger the Internet.

And by Thursday, Richards was also out of a job, her former boss and SendGrid CEO explaining her canning in a blog post of his own:

What we do not support was how she reported the conduct. Her decision to tweet the comments and photographs of the people who made the comments crossed the line. Publicly shaming the offenders ? and bystanders ? was not the appropriate way to handle the situation.

True enough, Richards threw the first snowball ... but she sure isn't responsible for the avalanche of over-reacting stupidity on behalf of pink slip-happy employers and the Internet Indignation Industrial Complex as a whole. Ironically, it's the same Internet Indignation Industrial Complex that Richards attempted initially to court via her tweet.

In her own blog post describing her actions, Richards implied she did it for the kids, specifically the female kids ... who, no doubt, are too busy making dongle jokes of their own to notice. (Richards, herself, made a juvenile genitals joke on her company's Twitter account days earlier.) And as any decent Human Resources department can tell you, it's not sexual harassment worthy of report unless you've asked the offender(s) to stop and he/they refuse. By Richards' own admission on her personal blog ? "I didn't want to be heckled or have my experience denied" ? she never addressed these dudes directly.

As for the joke ... well ... much like MacFarlane?s ?Boob Song,? the real victim here is comedy, not women. (Though to be fair, these dudes weren't telling their jokes at the Oscars.) But none of this is deserving of death threats, let along job loss, especially in this economy.

If there's any lesson here, it's the very same one everyone keeps not learning. Sure, dealing with even the most mundane problem in a mundane manner deprives you of the opportunity to broadcast it on social networks. But nine times out of ten, not broadcasting is the way to go.

Helen A.S. Popkin goes blah blah blah about the Internet. Overreact to her inconsequential nonsense on Twitter and/or Facebook.

Spring Home Maintenance Checklist | Free, Printable Inspection List ...

Spring-Home-Maintenance-ChecklistSpring cleaning gets all of the attention this time of year, but spring maintenance proves just as important, even more so in certain situations. Get your home in shape with our free Spring Home Maintenance Checklist. Read more about the to-do items included, then click on the image to the right and download for free.

1. Inspect Gutters and Downspouts
Gutters and downspouts must be free of debris and damage to correctly direct water away from your home?s foundation. Even if you live in an area of the country that doesn?t see much rainfall, check both to prevent a surprise if a storm hits. You do not want to learn about a clog by seeing water seepage into your home, whether in the basement or through the roof or fascia. All can result in costly repairs.

2. Remove Trees and Shrubs from Around House
Speaking of gutters, trees and shrubs too close to your home can brush up against them and cause damage during a windstorm. Foliage also can damage siding and creates access for an insect infestation. Trim foliage that brushes up your home to help prevent all of this.

3. Inspect Caulking Around Doors and Windows
Experts recommend replacing the caulk around windows and doors each spring, as cold temperatures can cause cracks, which lets air leak in and out of your home. Water also can get in where it shouldn?t through cracked caulk. Help increase the energy efficiency of your home with this task.

4. Inspect Wood Decks, Railings, Windowsills and Steps
Check the wood around your home for rot that took hold during the winter months. If boards become soft or splinter, they create an unsafe situation for you and your family. Replace whenever necessary.

5. Remove Mildew and Moss From Decks and Patios With Pressure Washer
Pressure washing sprays away unwanted mildew or moss from just about any surface. Use it to clean your tile patio, wooden deck, or concrete driveway and/or walkway. If you do pressure wash a wooden surface, give it a fresh coat of stain or sealant to keep it protected and looking its best.

6. Clean and Inspect Window Screens
Give your window screens a once-over to ensure no critters or pests can work their way through bent frames, holes or tears. A little work now will keep you from having to remove unwanted guests from your home.

7. Look for Moisture in Basement and Crawl Space
When you do get a good rain, look for leaks in your crawl space or basement that could turn into costly repairs. Also check regularly under bathrooms, the kitchen and laundry room to ensure pipes are intact.

8. Inspect Laundry Room Hoses for Cracking
Your laundry room also can be a source of flooding. Check the water-supply hoses each spring for cracks. When replacing these hoses, install a new washer at the end instead of reusing an old one that might have clogs or wear.

9. Inspect Grout in Bathroom Tiles
Check your bathroom grout for discoloration and crumbling. Grout protects flooring, shower enclosures and countertops from water damage, and it costs must less to replace than any of those items.

10. Replace Batteries in Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
If you did not replace the batteries in these important appliances when the clocks changed, a great reminder, by the way, do so as part of your spring maintenance. They should get fresh batteries twice a year, instead of when the chirping detector wakes you at 3 a.m.

Baby and Toddler Food Warning Every Parent Needs to Know

According to recent research, parents concerned about their baby?s or toddler?s health need to know that what is printed on the label of baby and toddler commercial pre-packaged meals and snacks should be the most important consideration before choosing that product for their child.

In research presented at the American Heart Association's Epidemiology and Prevention/Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism 2013 Scientific Sessions, researchers reveal the startling finding that nearly 75% of all commercial pre-packaged meals and savory snacks marketed for babies and toddlers are up to 3 times higher in salt content than that recommended for adults daily.

According to a new release by the American Heart Association, this is the first time a study has been done that evaluates the salt content of over 1,000 baby and toddler food products?including popular, name brand food items.

The health officials reported that the amount of salt in toddler meals are typically greater than that found in baby foods with the highest salt content reaching as high as 630 grams of salt per serving. Savory snacks and meals for toddlers were the biggest dietary offenders. A salt content of 210 grams or more per serving is categorized as ?high in sodium? with a recommended daily allowance of 1,500 mg by the American Heart Association.

"Our concern is the possible long-term health risks of introducing high levels of sodium in a child's diet, because high blood pressure, as well as a preference for salty foods may develop early in life. The less sodium in an infant's or toddler's diet, the less he or she may want it when older," states Joyce Maalouf, M.S., M.P.H., ORISE, lead author and Fellow at the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia.

"Parents and other caregivers can read the nutrition facts labels on baby and toddler foods, to choose the healthiest options for their child," says Maalouf.

This same advice applies to older preschool children as well. A recent online check at the website calorieking.com reveals that the popular ?Lunchables? series of meals that too-busy parents often stuff into their kids? lunch boxes shows that the prepackaged ?Oscar Mayer Turkey & Cheddar Cheese Lunchables with Crackers? packs a whopping 910 mg of sodium!

For an informative article about salt awareness, follow the link titled ?Top 10 Salty Foods To Avoid in Your Diet? for additional useful health information.
