(AP) ? Judgment day is approaching in an epic battle between Argentina and New York billionaire Paul Singer, who has sent lawyers around the globe trying to force the South American country to pay its defaulted debts.

Three U.S. appellate judges hear oral arguments in New York on Wednesday in the case, NML Capital Ltd. v. Argentina. The case has shaken bond markets, worried bankers, lawyers and diplomats, captivated financial analysts and generated enough "friend of the court" briefs to kill a small forest.

Much more is at stake than the future of Argentina's shaky economy, which could collapse if President Cristina Fernandez goes into default rather than pay a judgment of more than $1.3 billion to the plaintiffs, whom she calls "vulture funds."

The U.S. Federal Reserve and the world's largest banks have warned that the smooth functioning of the global funds-transfer system is threatened by U.S. District Judge Thomas Griesa's unusual proposal for forcing Argentina to pay. The same appellate judges hearing arguments Wednesday have already broadly upheld Griesa's plan but want more details on how it would work.

Argentina and the Obama administration both argued that the judge's remedy could make debt relief harder for troubled economies, dooming their citizens to more years of poverty than necessary.

"While the U.S. government does not condone Argentina's actions in the international financial arena," this ruling also could damage U.S. foreign policy, threaten U.S. assets overseas and even harm the U.S. dollar by persuading nations to take their bond business elsewhere, the administration's brief said.

Here are some questions and answers on how so much could be at stake in what seems to be a simple contract dispute:

Q. What was Griesa's ruling?

A. The judge wants U.S. financial institutions to become his enforcers, diverting the payments that Argentina makes to other bondholders if it doesn't first pay an equal amount to the plaintiffs. The Bank of New York, which normally processes the payments, would have to redirect the money to the plaintiffs, and banks say such interventions could threaten the automatic nature of the U.S. electronic funds transfer system, which is vital to the global economy.

Q. Who are the bondholders already being repaid?

A. More than 92 percent of the debt from Argentina's world-record $100 billion default in 2001 was restructured in 2005 and 2010. Argentina gave them new bonds initially worth less than 30 cents on the dollar. These "exchange bondholders" are slowly regaining their original investments: Most already have been paid 71 cents for each dollar invested. This slow recuperation is what debt relief looks like for troubled economies ? it has been key to Argentina's recovery.

Q. Who are the bondholders who went to court?

A. A small group refused the debt swaps and filed suit instead. Griesa ruled in their favor, and ordered the Bank of New York to reroute any payments that Argentina makes to other bondholders until the plaintiffs get paid in full, plus interest.

Q. Why go to such extremes?

A. Argentina has ignored a number of court judgments, and Griesa is determined to get satisfaction after many years of litigation. Argentina still hasn't made payments on $10 billion in defaulted debt dating from its 2001 economic collapse. Adding other unpaid judgments, loans and other claims, including $10.5 billion sought by Grupo Repsol for the YPF oil company expropriated last year, Argentina owes as much as $61 billion.

Q. What about NML Capital's position that Argentina's central bank holds enough currency reserves to easily pay the $1.3 billion sought by the plaintiffs?

A. Argentina's dollar reserves dropped to $41 billion this week as uncertainty fueled capital flight. More than half of that is already loaned out or otherwise committed, and Argentina says the reserves can't withstand the demands of creditors for immediate payment of $43 billion that would be triggered if it was forced to pay Singer's group. Graham Fisher analyst Joshua Rosen, however, says: "Argentina is a $450 billion, G-20 economy, and the government has numerous other sources of liquidity" if it decides to negotiate a deal.

Q. What are the arguments over Griesa basing his ruling on the "equal treatment" clause in Argentina's 1990s-era bond contracts?

A. NML Capital says getting paid immediately in full, plus interest, is more than fair, because the plaintiffs spent millions litigating while the holders of swap bonds were getting regular payments. A group of the latter bondholders counters that there's nothing fair about taking other people's property, or getting as much as a 1,500 percent return on debt bought for pennies on the dollar.

Q. What about Argentina's suggestion that "equal treatment" could be provided through a new debt swap giving holdouts the same terms others accepted?

A. Anna Gelpern, an American University law professor who has closely followed the case, says Argentina is arguing for a bankruptcy concept of fairness ? that when debtors can't pay, all creditors must suffer, accepting less so that recovery can happen more quickly. Sovereign debt relief depends on this concept, and many of the legal briefs reflect a desire that the courts invoke it while engineering a comprehensive solution to Argentina's debt problems. But Gelpern says the appeals panel is more likely to base its ruling in simple contract terms, as in, "they owe the money, and they need to pay."

Q. What's the end game?

A. Expect the appellate ruling in two to four months. Most analysts predict Argentina will lose and further appeals will be turned down, giving this panel the final word. Since Argentina appears unwilling to settle out of court, J.P. Morgan analyst Vladimir Werning says, "This boils down to a blueprint for an end game where Argentina snuffs N.Y. law, its courts and its payment system and it offers restructured bondholders the option of getting paid fully in Buenos Aires."

Q. Would Argentina really pull out of the U.S. financial system?

A. Economist Rodolfo Rossi, Argentina's central bank president in the 1990s, says ending up "completely isolated and refusing to pay its debts" would only bring more trouble for the country. Like many Argentines who have backed Fernandez's fight against the holdouts, he says she can't show weakness now, but has to settle eventually in order to refinance all of Argentina's debts and bring back investment.

How To Leave Your Job On Good Terms - Business Insider

The best way to?resign?is to leave your boss wishing you will return.

And the best way to do that is to be gracious and helpful as you move to a?new job?or step into self-employment. Even if you?re being ushered out, staying upbeat and professional can mean the difference between a good recommendation and good riddance.

?It?s always better to leave a door open than to open a new one,? said Jodi Glickman, president of Great on the Job, a communication training firm. ?You always want to leave on a high note so people will want to work for you again.?

So as you give your two weeks? notice, think through the ways you can shine and help ease the transition. ?Don?t rush out the door? without tending to relationships and future references you may need, saidBarbara Herzog, a career coach in Washington, D.C.

Here?s a half dozen ways to build relationships as you?re saying good-bye at the office:

1. Tell Your Most Valued Coworkers First.?The day you give notice, or as soon as possible afterward, call or visit ?the four or five people who have been most supportive of you,? said Herzog. These are your mentor, your best friend at work, the person who hired you ? in short the professionals you want to cultivate for the future. You want to tell them yourself you?re leaving.? Be sure to tell them how valuable their support was. If it seems appropriate, offer your help to them, their families or their nonprofit causes in the future.

2. Show Respect and Appreciation.??There is some credit due? since your work and development on your current job were a crucial part of why you landed the new one, said Glickman, whose posts appear on the?Harvard Business Review blog. ?Be appreciative.? This is important especially if you?re going to work for a competitor. Have a candid conversation with your boss explaining the value you expect to gain from your new job and expressing appreciation for her support and opportunities. Draw the distinction between your personal success and your attachment to the company you?re leaving, said Glickman.

3. Find Your Replacement.??I always encourage people to find their replacement? before they leave, said Glickman. If your boss prefers, tap your network and come up with at least three good prospects. Give your employer ?a head start? with people who are pre-vetted, she said

4.?Exit Without Negativity.?Even if you think your insights may help your colleagues or the next employees, don?t share anything negative or that needs fixing, said Herzog. ?It is counterproductive to your career,? she said. Instead, make your comments generic and be sure to say you ?appreciated the support of my supervisor and colleagues.?

5.?Send a Thank You Note.?Make the effort to send a?thank you note?to your supervisor and another senior manager who aided your career. ?Be specific about one or two things that meant a lot to you,? said Herzog. The thank you should be separate from a very short, two- or three-sentence resignation letter, and may be sent a few weeks after you?ve departed.

6. Follow Up.?Set a Google Alert so you stay in touch with news and changes at your former employer. Touch base with some of your contacts there three to six months after you?ve left. Send a ?thinking of you? note, article or piece of information, said Glickman. Then schedule a breakfast, lunch or coffee meeting and see if you can bring something valuable to them.

These approaches can work equally well for staffers departing or freelancers moving on, Glickman said, and smart employers also understand the value of good relations with their alumni networks. ?It makes good business sense to leave on good terms,? she said, since you never know when you will looking for work or someone to hire in the future.

Obama says no smart way to let budget cuts kick in

(AP) ? No progress to report in efforts to stave off looming government-wide spending cuts, President Barack Obama on Tuesday singled out for praise the few Republicans who say they're open to aspects of his approach, seeking to turn up the heat on GOP leaders ahead of Friday's deadline.

Obama rejected a proposal floated by Senate Republicans to give the president more flexibility to pick and choose which programs should be cut to reach the $85 billion over seven months mandated by the so-called sequester. "There's no smart way to do that," he said.

"These cuts are wrong. They're not smart, they're not fair. They're a self-inflicted wound that doesn't have to happen," Obama added at a shipbuilding site in Virginia.

The White House has warned the $85 billion in cuts could affect everything from commercial flights to classrooms to meat inspections. The cuts would slash domestic and defense spending, leading to forced unpaid days off for hundreds of thousands of workers.

The impact won't be immediate. Federal workers would be notified next week that they will have to take up to a day every week off without pay, but the furloughs won't start for a month due to notification requirements. That will give negotiators some breathing room to keep working on a deal.

The sequester was designed as an unpalatable fallback, meant to take effect only if a congressional super-committee failed to come up with at least $1 trillion in savings from benefit programs. Obama wants to replace the sequester with a package of targeted cuts and tax increases, while Republican leaders insist the savings should come from reduced spending alone.

With GOP leaders refusing to entertain the president's proposals, Obama turned to the few rank-and-file Republicans who have suggested they are open to solutions that include raising new revenues to replace some of the cuts.

"I've got to give Scott Rigell credit," Obama said, referring to the Virginia Republican who traveled with him on Air Force One to call attention to the need to find a way out of the looming cuts.

He acknowledged it was politically difficult for Republicans like Rigell to be seen with Obama, but said that he's part of a chorus of Republicans urging Congress to strike a deal. Obama also pointed to Virginia's Republican governor, Bob McDonnell, and to Sen. John McCain, who was set to discuss the sequester along with other topics later Tuesday in a meeting with Obama and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.

"I boarded the plane knowing that some would potentially misinterpret this," said Rigell, who both criticized Obama for not putting forward a detailed plan and criticized Republicans who say there's no room to raise revenue or that the sequester should go into effect. "Even if you hold the view that defense spending should come down, this is not the right way to do it."

Even that minor point of consensus seemed far removed from the sentiment on Capitol Hill, where Republican leaders criticized the president for taking his arguments outside Washington, instead of staying to work out a plan before the deadline.

"The president has been traveling all over the country, and today going down to Newport News, in order to use our military men and women as a prop in yet another campaign rally to support his tax hikes," said House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio.

At Newport News Shipbuilding, Virginia's largest industrial employer, Obama renewed his effort to warn of the dire consequences the cuts could have on military readiness and local economies. He spoke in front of a massive submarine propeller, with workmen and the few female employees watching up from the cavernous assembly floor and down along railings from three open levels above.

"The threat of these cuts has already forced the Navy to cancel the deployment and delay the repair of certain aircraft carriers," Obama said.

Mike Petters , president and CEO of factory parent company Huntington Ingalls, said in an interview that the company will probably "throttle back" plans to hire between 10,000 and 15,000 workers over the next five years because of the budget uncertainty. He said his biggest headache in running the business is the continuing resolution.

"Fundamentally how do you do next year's budget if you don't know what this year's is like? So there's a lot of turmoil there and a lot of confusion," he said. "And what we're telling the workforce is look, there's a lot of stuff moving around out there, please try not to get too distracted by that."

The Navy has already delayed a long-planned overhaul of the USS Abraham Lincoln at Newport News Shipbuilding as a result of the budget uncertainty, and other plans call for delaying the construction of other ships. In Virginia alone, the White House says, about 90,000 civilians working for the Defense Department would be furloughed for a cut of nearly $650 million in gross pay.

Echoing Obama's warnings about the military repercussion were the five members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who traveled to Capitol Hill to say the cuts could impart a serious blow to military readiness. Their appearance marked the fourth time in the last three weeks that top Pentagon leaders have testified before Congress about the cuts.

Horse meat sold in beef products in Hungary - watchdog

BUDAPEST (Reuters) - Horse meat labelled as beef has been sold in Hungary, the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nebih) said on Tuesday.

Gyorgy Pleva, director of Nebih told television channel TV2 that the authorities were looking into three separate cases of suspected horse meat found at the retail and wholesale level.

"Horse meat certainly got into (shops)," he said, adding that all the shipments investigated by the authority took place last year.

Horse meat has been found in beef products across Europe in recent weeks, damaging confidence in the continent's vast and complex food industry.

A small amount of hamburger meat containing horse meat was sold last summer in a Hungarian restaurant, Pleva said, without disclosing the origin of the product.

The Hungarian distributor of food brand Nowaco will withdraw a lasagne product in a few days, which is suspected of containing horse meat, he added.

"What we can say is that even if there is such a product, that will be taken off from the shelves within days," he said.

DNA tests in the Czech Republic have shown that two batches of frozen Nowaco Lasagne Bolognese in a branch of the Tesco supermarket chain contained horse meat, and authorities said the products listed Luxembourg as the country of origin.

Pleva said another lasagne product, which was made in Hungary, was also being probed based on a report from Denmark, the intended destination of the product. He did not clarify whether this product got into Danish shops and could not immediately be reached for further comment.

Bargain-hunting gives South African stocks a boost

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African stocks edged up on Monday as investors hunted for bargains following a recent sell-off with banks and retailers among the top gainers.

Major retailers, the biggest losers on the bourse so far this year after a thunderous rise in 2012, recouped some lost ground. Mr Price gained 2.5 percent higher to 121.82 rand and Woolworths climbed 3.6 percent to 68.80 rand.

Investors have been offloading retailers from their portfolios over the last month after a spate of sales updates and earnings results failed to justify the companies' lofty trading multiples.

The JSE Top-40 index was up 0.3 percent to 35,359.19 and the broader All-share index gained by the same margin, to 39,787.96.

"There's still a lot of nervousness in the market ahead of the budget, the outcome of Italy elections and the debt ceiling but there is some bargain hunting after last week's sell-off," Henre Herselman, a trader a Nedbank Private Wealth said.

Nedbank, whose 19 percent rise in annual profit undershot market expectations, gained 0.8 percent to 189.50 rand after beating forecasts with a 24 percent hike in dividend payout.

Rival FirstRand improved 0.75 percent to 30.73 rand after the lender said first-half headline earnings per share likely rose as much as 29 percent.

On the downside, contract mining and equipment firm Eqstra dropped 1.8 percent to 5.99 rand, falling for the second day on news of a 146 million rand buyout offer for shares it does not already own in civil engineering firm Protech Khuthele Holdings.

A below average 143 million shares were traded, according to preliminary exchange data, with advancers outpacing decliners 204 to 112, while 55 shares were unchanged.

Daytona's preliminary TV rating up from last year

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? With Danica Patrick starting from the pole, the Daytona 500's preliminary television ratings were much higher than last year's.

Sunday afternoon's race earned a 10.0 overnight rating and 22 share on Fox, the network said Monday. That's up 30 percent from 2012, when rain pushed the event to a Monday night. It was the highest overnight rating since 2006.

Jimmie Johnson won the race while Patrick was eighth, the best finish by a woman at the Daytona 500.

The race had plenty of buildup: Patrick making history as the first woman to start a Sprint Cup race from the pole, the revamped cars, no more tandem drafting, and a frightening crash the day before in the second-tier Nationwide Series.

"I noticed something last night coming out of the track for dinner, just seemed to be a different vibe inside the infield," said Dale Earnhardt Jr., who finished second Sunday. "People seemed more excited about what was getting ready to happen. Even today, there seemed to be a whole lot more people here. Seemed to be a lot more excitement about the race.

"That really was the biggest motivator for me. I think we're headed in the right direction. ... For some reason, it just felt like we're on the right track as a sport. That's got me really excited."

Ratings represent the percentage of all homes with televisions tuned to a program. Shares represent the percentage of all homes with TVs in use at the time. Overnight ratings measure the country's largest markets.

Ski. Acosta Wins GS; Lobos Move to Fifth Place at RMISA Championships/NCAA Regionals

RMISA Championships/NCAA West Regionals Results - Day 2 Get Acrobat Reader

BOZEMAN, Mont. -- For the second year in a row, Chris Acosta is an RMISA/NCAA West Regionals champion as the Lobo senior won today's giant slalom event in Bozeman, Mont. Acosta, a native of Ashland, Wisc., won the slalom at last year's Regionals. It's his second victory in 2013 and his third of his career.

The Lobos moved up one spot and sit in fifth after the second day of competition. New Mexico has 523 points and sits ahead of Alaska-Anchorage, who has 477.

Colorado leads all teams with 711 points, Utah is second with 625 and Denver is third with 616. Montana State sits within reach of the Lobos in fourth with 550 points.

"I am very happy for Chris Acosta who had an awesome race today," head coach Fredrik Landstedt said. "It was a little bit better day for the Nordics and we had some other great results for the Alpine team."

Nordic events concluded on Saturday with a 15/20K mass-start freestyle race. The RMISA Championships/NCAA West Regionals conclude tomorrow with the slalom.

Alpine - Giant Slalom

Acosta propelled a second-place finish by the Lobo men in the giant slalom. UNM's women finished third and collectively, New Mexico was second in the giant slalom.

Michael Bansmer was the Lobos' second point placer as he finished seventh. The sophomore had the fastest time of the field for the second run.

Sean Horner was next and finished 18th. Joonas Rasanen, Mark Miller and Juho-Pekka Penttinen also raced and placed 20th, 21st and 30th, respectively.

Sophomore Mateja Robnik led the Lobo women and earned her first podium finish in RMISA competition as she finished third. Seniors Kate Williams and Mary Rachel Hostetter placed 11th and 18th to round out UNM's scoring.

Freshman Courtney Altringer finished 25th.

Nordic - 15/20K Mass-Start Freestyle

Mats Rudin Resaland led all Nordic Lobos on Saturday as he placed sixth in the men's 20K mass-start freestyle. The sophomore finished the course in 59:21.1.

Junior Christian Otto and senior Eivind Odden Solberg were the other two Lobos that competed. Otto placed 22nd (1:03:07.5) and Solberg finished 27th (1:09:29.6).

Sophomore Clara Chauvet led the Nordic Lobo women with an 11th-place finish, completing the 15K mass-start freestyle in 53:23.9. Senior Linn Havelsrud Klaesson was 14th (54:46.6) and junior Anita Kirvesniemi was 23rd (57:39.3) to round out UNM's scoring. Senior Ingrid Leask finished the course in 1:00:08.2 and placed 26th.

"Mats had a real shot at the podium but fell one kilometer from the finish," Landstedt said. "Clara finished in ninth but got a 15 second penalty for skiing out of the trail for a few yards and was moved down to 11th. She skied a good race, and Linn also had a better race today."

Hands-on with the Sony Xperia Z

Apart from getting a decent amount of hands-on time with the new HTC One while I was in Sydney, I also took the time to get a quick look at Sony's new Android flagship, the Xperia Z. Like the HTC One, this device is set to launch very shortly across a range of carriers; we first heard of the device way back at CES 2013, however,?so the information has had a little bit of time to settle.

The last Sony device I had any decent time with was the Xperia S, their previous major phone that was launched early last year. It had some very decent features, including a beautiful Exmor R camera and solid media software, however the design left a lot to be desired and the phone's Snapdragon S3 processor was quickly surpassed by devices launched a few months later.

The thickness of the Xperia Z compared to the Nokia Lumia 920

The Xperia Z is quite a different device, because everything feels refined from what we've seen before. The solid camera makes a comeback, as does the media brilliance, but the specifications appear a lot more future proof (just look at the 5-inch, 1080p display) and the design is, simply put, the best smartphone hardware Sony has ever concocted.

Upon first handling the Xperia Z the size is noticeable, of course as it has to?accommodate?that 5-inch "Reality" display. Comparing it directly to the Lumia 920 (a large enough device as it is), it's roughly the same width but slightly taller, and a considerable amount thinner at just 7.9mm. While I wouldn't say the glass/plastic construction is as breathtaking as the HTC One, or as sturdy as the Lumia 920, it still feels fantastic in the hand because of its svelte, refined design.

It also looks fantastic as far as modern smartphone designs go: the Xperia Z is basically a thin, minimalist slate with little curvature in the construction, which fits well with the design language of the latest version of Android. As Sony has managed to keep the thickness down to 7.9mm, it doesn't really need to utilize any tapering to hide a thick middle, and I appreciate the end result.

I especially like the way the phone looks from the rear, and although the reflective plastic will likely cause a great deal of fingerprints, keep it clean and the sleek black panel will draw your eyes to it every time. Ideally, the certification logos on the back should be removed to have the cleanest design, but it's not a huge deal. Perhaps a bigger complaint will be the positioning of the power button on the right-hand side, which could be too low, but I'll reserve judgement for when I get a review unit.

The 1080p display was also a real highlight of my hands-on time, as it simply looks beautiful, especially when looking at photos enhanced by the Mobile Bravia Engine. It's so incredibly crisp, breaking the 300 pixel-per-inch golden number by a huge amount, so even when you're looking at the display as close as your eyes will focus, pixels are still invisible. At five inches there's also a lot of real estate to work with, and it seemed to deal with artificial light reflections quite well.

Another aspect that impressed me in my brief time with the phone was the 13-megapixel camera packing an improved Exmor RS sensor behind fast f/2.2 glass. By default the phone shoots 16:9 images at 9 megapixels, which look great and pack a decent amount of detail, however what impressed me most was the 10fps burst mode at 9 MP, which is quick and consistent enough to shoot over 1,000 photos in under 2 minutes. A sample shot from the camera can be seen below.

The Xperia Z packs a 1.5 GHz quad-core?APQ8064 Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset, and while it isn't one of the latest Snapdragon 600s or 800s, in my time using the phone it felt super snappy and enough to satisfy. Browsing the web (checking out Neowin, of course) and flicking between apps was without any slowdown, but we'll have to wait just a little bit longer for gaming performance. The phone also packs a microSD card slot (yay!) and its waterproof???something I unfortunately couldn't test at the time.

I wouldn't say I was as initially impressed by the Xperia Z as I was by the HTC One???Sony's new flagship was very much as I was expecting after seeing it first at CES???but that doesn't mean it'll be a bad device. I eagerly await some proper time with the phone for a review, which if everything goes to plan will be up sometime in March.

Greece: Fierce storm causes blackouts, road havoc

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Torrential rainfall in Greece's capital Friday crippled traffic, inundated basements and streets, and was blamed for the death of woman whose car was trapped in floodwater, authorities said.

The overnight storm swept across greater Athens, flooding hundreds of homes, causing blackouts in parts of the city and forcing authorities to close major roads and a central subway station in Athens.

"We have many, many problems ? it's hard to know where to begin describing it," Deputy Fire Chief Vassilis Papageorgiou said.

"We have more than 60 crews working to get people out of stranded vehicles."

Police closed underpasses and highways in low-lying parts of the city after they were submerged, while parked cars were swept away by racing waters.

A 23-year-old woman who had been trapped in her car on a flooded suburban road died shortly after being pulled free by other motorists and taken to a hospital, police said. Doctors said a preliminary examination suggested she had died of heart failure.

The fire department said it received about 1,500 calls to pump out water in greater Athens. During five hours of heavy rainfall, more than 100 millimeters (3.9 inches) fell in some parts of the city ? more than the monthly average of 50 millimeters (1.9 inches).

An abandoned house collapsed in the city center, but no injuries were reported, while a factory north of Athens was seriously damaged when floodwater eroded the ground beneath the structure.

The capital's tram system was also shut down for more than an hour, while urban rail schedules were disrupted after a tree fell onto the tracks. The rain also caused power cuts in parts of the city.

In Parliament, a worker clearing water from the roof of the main assembly hall during a session tripped and went through a glass skylight, but was pulled to safety by a policeman.

The accident occurred as Cabinet members were preparing to answer questions.

"The worker could have landed on our heads," Sports Minister Yiannis Ioannidis said.

Limit Major Decisions to Three People to Avoid Wasting Time

Limit Major Decisions to Three People to Avoid Wasting TimeCollaboration is great, but sometimes collaboration can devolve into useless debate that doesn't get you anywhere. The Globe and Mail recommend limiting those big decisions to three people or less.

The fewer people are involved, the less time you'll end up wasting:

Use the rule of three. Keep major decisions to three or fewer people. The more people involved the longer it takes to come to a consensus. Small teams coordinate and make decisions, while big ones quibble and form committees.

Similarly, they say meetings can be toxic to productivity, particularly if you do a bad job of sticking to the meeting's agenda. You don't want to undermine your coworkers by making every decision without them, but sometimes, things need to be decided quickly in order to keep productive and move forward. It's up to you to decide when that is. Hit the link for 10 more productivity tips for working with teams.

Green Real Estate: High Performance Homes ? GreenDream - The ...

High Performance Home Symposium in Las Vegas

Imagine you had some great products to sell. They were the best available in terms of value and longevity. They helped protect people?s health and improved their quality of life. They were so good that the people who actually found out about them agreed to buy as many as you could make for the price you were asking. Sounds like a great scenario right?

Now add one little twist. The sales could not go through without the agreement of a third party who, unfortunately, did not understand the value of your product. They had simply not been trained to value the features that made your products so desirable. Your customers went away frustrated. You lost sales ? perhaps even your business.

Green Home Market Needs Education

Unfortunately, this describes the market for green homes in the U.S. over the last several years. Some major builders have had a very difficult time closing on new, high-performance homes because of one thing: A lack of education about the true value of their products.

Customers had found these green homes, liked them and were ready to buy. The appraisal / lending process did not recognize the value of super-efficient building practices, solar power, healthy indoor air quality, high-efficiency lighting and appliances, and low energy bills. The end result was unfortunate for the builders, the potential homeowners and the greater community.

The issue goes even deeper. The entire industry has some catching-up to do. Smart, progressive builders need equally smart realtors, appraisers, underwriters and others in the financial process, because each plays a role in acknowledging the true value of a home. Only then will savvy home buyers have the choices they are demanding in ever-increasing numbers.

Enter Annette Bubak. She is the powerhouse at the helm of the Green Alliance and has done more to promote Energy Star homes in Southern Nevada than anyone I know. We have the highest market penetration of Energy Star homes in the country thanks in large part to her efforts. She believes that education is the key and fortunately for the rest of us, puts her belief into practice. Events like GREENFest and previous high-quality training events for realtors and appraisers would not have happened without her.

High Performance Home Symposium

The really good news is that Southern Nevada?s real estate professionals have another opportunity to take it to the next level on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 by attending the High Performance Home Symposium. This full day event will feature key speakers and presentations on topics such as: the value of being a GREEN Designated Realtor; the latest trends in high-performance homes along with financing tools and appraisal techniques; greening the Multiple Listing Service (MLS); marketing green homes; and the latest information on rebate and incentive programs.

This is a premier event for real estate professionals, appraisers and anyone else involved in building, selling or financing homes. Produced by the Green Alliance and the Greater Las Vegas Association of Realtors (GLVAR) Green Committee, the event is open to all. GLVAR members get a small discount but the full price for an entire day of valuable education is only $30 so there is no reason to miss it. NV Energy is even sponsoring the first 100 registrants. You can call Annette Bubak at 702-400-2428 to register or you can download the High Performance Home Symposium Flyer (PDF).

If you are simply a mere homeowner, I?ll bet you know at least one realtor, appraiser, lender or home builder who would love to know about this event. Help spread the word as we accelerate the market for green, healthy, efficient homes in Nevada.

Green Tech Festival at CSN

Also, I want to make sure you know about the 3rd Annual Green Tech Festival at CSN (West Charleston campus) on Saturday, March 2nd, 2013. The full day event will include speakers and vendors at the forefront of the green movement. Guest speakers include Rob Mrowka of the Center for Biological Diversity and Launce Rake, long-time environmental advocate and reporter extraordinaire. I will be part of the Greening Homes panel at 11 AM. Visit our Green Calendar for more information, including a link to register for a free lunch.

Canadian miner Eldorado profit rises on higher gold sales

(Reuters) - Canadian miner Eldorado Gold Corp on Friday reported a boost in fourth-quarter profit as an increase in bullion sales outweighed higher operating costs.

Net earnings rose to $115 million, or 16 cents a share, in the fourth quarter, ended Dec 31. That compared with $88.8 million, or 16 cents, a year earlier.

Lower income tax expenses due to an investment tax credit in Turkey helped the result.

Analysts, on average, had expected earnings of 14 cents a share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Gold production increased 13 percent to 190,530 ounces, while total cash costs climbed 17 percent to $566 an ounce, the company said. The realized gold price rose slightly to $1,69 from $1,686.

Vancouver-based Eldorado plans to produce some 705,000 to 760,000 ounces in 2013, up from 656,324 ounces in 2012.

Capital expenditures for the year are expected to be about $410 million, with some $200 million pegged for the expansion project at the Kisladag mine in Turkey, the company said.

Eldorado, which is developing mines around the world, owns gold projects in Turkey and China, along with a base metal mine in Greece and an iron ore project in Brazil.

Sun's next-door twin: Cool layer in the atmosphere of Alpha Centauri A

Feb. 20, 2013 ? The European Space Agency's Herschel space observatory has detected a cool layer in the atmosphere of Alpha Centauri A, the first time this has been seen in a star beyond our own Sun. The finding is not only important for understanding the Sun's activity, but could also help in the quest to discover proto-planetary systems around other stars.

The Sun's nearest neighbours are the three stars of the Alpha Centauri system. The faint red dwarf, Proxima Centauri, is nearest at just 4.24 light-years, with the tight double star, Alpha Centauri AB, slightly further away at 4.37 light-years.

Alpha Centauri B has recently been in the news after the discovery of an Earth-mass planet in orbit around it. But Alpha Centauri A is also very important to astronomers: almost a twin to the Sun in mass, temperature, chemical composition and age, it provides an ideal natural laboratory to compare other characteristics of the two stars.

One of the great curiosities in solar science is that the Sun's wispy outer atmosphere -- the corona -- is heated to millions of degrees while the visible surface of the Sun is 'only' about 6000?C. Even stranger, there is a temperature minimum of about 4000?C between the two layers, just a few hundred kilometres above the visible surface in the part of Sun's atmosphere called the chromosphere.

Both layers can be seen during a total solar eclipse, when the Moon briefly blocks the bright face of the Sun: the chromosphere is a pink-red ring around the Sun, while the ghostly white plasma streamers of the corona extend out millions of kilometres.

The heating of the Sun's atmosphere has been a conundrum for many years, but is likely to be related to the twisting and snapping of magnetic field lines sending energy rippling through the atmosphere and out into space -- possibly in the direction of Earth -- as solar storms. Why there is a temperature minimum has also long been of interest to solar scientists.

Now, by observing Alpha Centauri A in far-infrared light with Herschel and comparing the results with computer models of stellar atmospheres, scientists have made the first discovery of an equivalent cool layer in the atmosphere of another star.

"The study of these structures has been limited to the Sun until now, but we clearly see the signature of a similar temperature inversion layer at Alpha Centauri A," says Ren? Liseau of the Onsala Space Observatory, Sweden, and lead author of the paper presenting the results.

"Detailed observations of this kind for a variety of stars might help us decipher the origin of such layers and the overall atmospheric heating puzzle."

Using 3-D printing and injectable molds, bioengineered ears look and act like the real thing

Feb. 20, 2013 ? Cornell bioengineers and physicians have created an artificial ear -- using 3-D printing and injectable molds -- that looks and acts like a natural ear, giving new hope to thousands of children born with a congenital deformity called microtia.

In a study published online Feb. 20 in PLOS One, Cornell biomedical engineers and Weill Cornell Medical College physicians described how 3-D printing and injectable gels made of living cells can fashion ears that are practically identical to a human ear. Over a three-month period, these flexible ears grew cartilage to replace the collagen that was used to mold them.

"This is such a win-win for both medicine and basic science, demonstrating what we can achieve when we work together," said co-lead author Lawrence Bonassar, associate professor of biomedical engineering.

The novel ear may be the solution reconstructive surgeons have long wished for to help children born with ear deformity, said co-lead author Dr. Jason Spector, director of the Laboratory for Bioregenerative Medicine and Surgery and associate professor of plastic surgery at Weill Cornell in New York City.

"A bioengineered ear replacement like this would also help individuals who have lost part or all of their external ear in an accident or from cancer," Spector said. Replacement ears are usually constructed with materials that have a Styrofoam-like consistency, or sometimes, surgeons build ears from a patient's harvested rib. This option is challenging and painful for children, and the ears rarely look completely natural or perform well, Spector said.

To make the ears, Bonassar and colleagues started with a digitized 3-D image of a human subject's ear, and converted the image into a digitized "solid" ear using a 3-D printer to assemble a mold.

This Cornell-developed, high-density gel is similar to the consistency of Jell-o when the mold is removed. The collagen served as a scaffold upon which cartilage could grow.

The process is also fast, Bonassar added: "It takes half a day to design the mold, a day or so to print it, 30 minutes to inject the gel, and we can remove the ear 15 minutes later. We trim the ear and then let it culture for several days in nourishing cell culture media before it is implanted."

The incidence of microtia, which is when the external ear is not fully developed, varies from almost 1 to more than 4 per 10,000 births each year. Many children born with microtia have an intact inner ear, but experience hearing loss due to the missing external structure.

Spector and Bonassar have been collaborating on bioengineered human replacement parts since 2007. The researchers specifically work on replacement human structures that are primarily made of cartilage -- joints, trachea, spine, nose -- because cartilage does not need to be vascularized with a blood supply in order to survive.

"Using human cells, specifically those from the same patient, would reduce any possibility of rejection," Spector said.

He added that the best time to implant a bioengineered ear on a child would be when they are about 5 or six 6 old. At that age, ears are 80 percent of their adult size. If all future safety and efficacy tests work out, it might be possible to try the first human implant of a Cornell bioengineered ear in as little as three years, Spector said.

This week's sidebar poll: Which U.S. carrier will you be getting the HTC One on?

HTC One

HTC is billing the HTC One as the best smartphone available today. CEO Peter Chou said as much, and it's evident he believes it. We can't argue with anyone who agrees. It's packing an all-new next generation chip with the Snapdragon 600, has what looks to be an excellent camera, and amazing screen, and a sexy all aluminum chassis. The software side looks plenty innovative as well, and I can't wait to try out the Zoe features. In short, we know plenty of you guys and gals will be picking this one up.

Since the majority of our readers (hey, that's you!) hail from the United States, this week's sidebar poll is about US availability. Verizon was notably absent from the race to tell us all that we can buy an HTC One soon from our carrier's stores. We're not reading a lot into that by the way -- Verizon will be Verizon and do their own thing in their own time and the HTC One may show up there, Droid name in tow. Or it may not, and they end up with something completely different. Wait for an announcement before you blow a gasket.

Having sad that, we want to know who you plan on buying your HTC One from if you're going to buy one. When we have questions that only you folks can answer, we run a poll. Find it in the sidebar to the right, or just click past the break.

Genetically Engineered Babies? Experts Debate Idea Of 'Designer Baby' Ban

By: Wynne Parry, LiveScience Contributor
Published: 02/18/2013 11:55 AM EST on LiveScience

NEW YORK ? The increasing power and accessibility of genetic technology may one day give parents the option of modifying their unborn children, in order to spare offspring from disease or, conceivably, make them tall, well muscled, intelligent or otherwise blessed with desirable traits.

Would this change mean empowering parents to give their children the best start possible? Or would it mean designer babies who could face unforeseen genetic problems? Experts debated on Wednesday evening (Feb. 13) whether prenatal engineering should be banned in the United States.?

Humans have already genetically modified animals and crops, said Sheldon Krimsky, a philosopher at Tufts University, who argued in favor of a ban on the same for human babies. "But in the hundreds of thousands of trails that failed, we simply discarded the results of the unwanted crop or animal."

Unknown consequences

Is this a model that society wants to apply to humans, making pinpoint genetic modifications, only to "discard the results when they don't work out?" Krimsky asked during an Intelligence Squared Debate held in Manhattan. He added that assuming no mistakes will occur would be sheer hubris.

He and fellow ban proponent Lord Robert Winston, a professor of science and society and a fertility expert at Imperial College in London, focused on the uncertainty associated with the genetic underpinnings of traits. The two also addressed the consequences of manipulating genes. [5 Myths About Fertility Treatments]

"Even [for] height, one of the most heritable traits known, scientists have found at least 50 genes that account for only 2 to 3 percent of the variance in the samples," Krimsky said. "If you want a tall child, marry tall."

Mother Nature doesn?t care

Meanwhile, their opponents, who opposed the ban, talked of empowering parents to give their children a healthy life, even if it meant giving their offspring traits they themselves could not pass down.

Lee Silver, a professor of molecular biology and public policy at Princeton University, urged the audience members to look at someone sitting next to them.

"That person and you differ at over 1 million locations in your DNA [deoxyribonucleic acid]. Most [of these variations] don't do anything," Silver said. "[But] even if you are a healthy adult, 100 [of these] can cause deadly childhood disease in your children or grandchildren."

"Mother Nature is a metaphor," he continued. "And it is a bad metaphor, because in reality inheritance is a game of craps ? It won't have to be that way in the future."?

His fellow ban opponent, Nita Farahany, a professor of law and of genome sciences and policy at Duke University, attacked the idea that uncertainty should prevent the use of the technology, pointing out that reproduction, completely unaided by technology, involves much uncertainty.

"We are not going to ban natural sex," Farahany said.

Already possible

A significant portion of the debate focused on a particular technology known as mitochondrial transfer. While the majority of DNA resides in a cell's nucleus, a small amount is contained in the cell's energy factories, called mitochondria. This mitochondrial DNA is passed from mother to child. In rare cases, women have mitochondrial defects they can pass down to their children, causing devastating problems or even death.

Mitochondrial transfer can replace such defective mitochondrial DNA with that from a donor, allowing affected mothers to avoid passing these defects on to their children, who then carry genetic material from three parents (the father and two mothers, including the donor).

Opponents of a ban argued it would prevent women with mitochondrial disorders from having healthy children of their own.

"I am not here to defend every type of genetic engineering. I don't think we are ready as a society to embrace it all," Farahany said.

Rather than an outright ban, she and Silver argued for a middle ground, which would allow for certain procedures once they had been shown to be safe and effective. An emerging scientific consensus says mitochondrial transfer would fit into this category, she said.

Winston disagreed.

"We know fiddling with mitochondrial DNA may make a massive difference to what happens to nuclear DNA. ? Abnormal children have been born as result of mitochondrial transfer," he said. "I think, in preventing one genetic disease, you are likely to cause another genetic disease." [The 10 Most Mysterious Diseases]

Society should instead focus on the enormous importance of environmental influences in health, Winston said. "What we should be trying to do, rather than risk making abnormal babies, is to improve the environment so the DNA functions in the best possible ways."

Neither Farahany nor Silver argued in favor of allowing parents to modify their children to ensure other traits that are less medically necessary, but nevertheless desirable, such as higher intelligence or blue eyes.

"What I think parents care about most is promoting the health of their children," Silver said.

Leading to eugenics?

Both sides referred to the specter of eugenics, an idea embraced by the Nazis, which holds that selective breeding can be used to improve the human race.

Winston and Krimsky pointed out that genetically modifying children to choose desirable traits evoked this approach. Meanwhile, Farahany noted that some of the worst abuses of government in recent history involved attempts to control reproduction. How would a ban on the genetic modification of children be enforced, she asked, would all babies be forcibly tested???

An audience votedeclared the opponents of the ban the winners.

Sony Announces Surprise PlayStation Vita Price-Cut in Japan

Shows off God Eater 2, Soul Sacrifice, and Final Fantasy X HD

Sony Announces Surprise PlayStation Vita Price-Cut in Japan

In a surprise press conference overnight, Sony has announced that it is set to slash the price of the PlayStation Vita in Japan. The company confirmed that from 28th February, you?ll be able to pick up either a Wi-Fi or 3G console for around ?19,980 ($215), down from ?24,980 ($269). The platform holder has since confirmed that the cut won?t apply in the West, but there?s always a chance that something might be announced during Wednesday?s upcoming PlayStation Meeting.

For the time being, though, the move is clearly aimed at improving domestic handheld sales. During the surprise event, SCEJ president Hiroshi Kawano also revealed a Phantasy Star Online 2 bundle featuring a console and copy of the game for ?19,980, a red Soul Sacrifice bundle for ?24,980, and a handful of games. Japanese players will also be able to redeem one week of free PlayStation Plus access between 28th February and 18th March.

Amongst the titles on show were Toukiden, a brand new action game from Dynasty Warriors developer Omega Force. Gundam Breaker and Valhalla Knights 3 were also on display, as was God Eater 2. And, finally, the first footage of Final Fantasy X HD was shown, which looked particularly impressive we must admit.

It?s great timing for the price-drop, with the Vita finally gathering a decent collection of heavy hitters in its home region. The console is now just ?1,080 ($11) more expensive than the Nintendo 3DS, which is pretty impressive when you consider the differences in technical prowess. The platform holder needs to continue bringing a steady stream of games, though, if it hopes to compete with its closest competitor?s unstoppable juggernaut.

At least this is a step in the right direction.
