NEW?BRITAIN >> Although he was born in Bruce Springsteen?s hometown of Freehold, N.J., Anthony Ranaudo is only a casual fan of The Boss.
?I definitely like him and listen to his music, but I?m not a diehard,? he noted.
If you were to label Ranaudo?s 2013 season with a Springsteen song, ?The Rising? would be as good a choice as any.
The 6-foot-7, 230-pound righthander has bounced back from an injury-plagued 2012 campaign and emerged as one of the top pitching prospects in the Red Sox organization. Ranaudo is 8-2 with a 2.68 ERA for Double-A Portland and will start for the Eastern Division team in today?s Eastern League All-Star Game at 7:05 p.m. at New Britain Stadium.
?I?m looking forward to it,? Ranaudo said after an hour of signing autographs for hundreds of fans. ?There are a lot of great pitchers in this league, and a lot of guys having great years. To go get the ball to start the game (today) is a great honor. It should be a lot of fun.?
A few days later, he?ll head to New York City to compete in the Futures Game, the annual gathering of the game?s top prospects that?s part of Major League Baseball?s All-Star Game festivities at Citi Field on Sunday. The way Ranaudo has been progressing, it may not be his only trip to a major league ballpark before this summer is over.
?It?s an honor, I?m really excited about it,? he said. ?If people want to talk about my name moving up and stuff, that?s great. But I?m trying to focus on the fact that I?m healthy and confident again. I feel good about myself and my health and about the pitches that I?m throwing, going out each and every time and being able to compete.?
Ranaudo, a first-round draft pick by the Sox in 2010, made just nine starts between battling injuries last season with Portland. He strained his groin in spring training and didn?t make his first start until May 15. After going just 1-3 with a 6.69 ERA, he was shut down for the rest of the season on Juy 3 with shoulder fatigue.
This season, however, he?s healthy and back to commanding his fastball, which has been routinely sitting in the mid-90?s. Add more consistency to his curveball and great development of his changeup and Ranaudo?s been the Eastern League?s best pitcher through the first half of the season.
?I was really focused on being healthy and hoping that the success came,? he said. ?Obviously, I expected to do well. But what?s happened so far is just kind of a reward to what hard work I?ve put in, what the Red Sox have put in, and my physical therapist with the injuries that I had. I don?t want to say I didn?t expect it, but it?s just an honor and it?s pretty cool to see all this happen.? Continued...
Great Cesar
Cesar Puello, a rising star in the Mets? system, showed off some of his power in Tuesday night?s Home Run Derby. Puello racked up 190 points, though it wasn?t enough to win the contest.
Puello has been a revelation thus far at Double-A Binghamton. The 6-foot-2 outfielder is hittng .328 with 15 homers and 55 RBI, along with 19 stolen bases.
?He?s got five tools and he plays the game hard,? said a National League scout. ?He plays the game the way it oughta be played, runs hard, very aggressive in his game. He?s got a chance to be a starting outfielder for the Mets in the next couple of years.?
Said Puello: ?I?m trying to be positive ... That?s the key right there, playing hard no matter what. Playing hard, anything can happen, you put pressure on the other team.?
Puello has, however, been named in the scandal involving Biogenesis, a former Miami-based clinic that allegedly provided performance-enhancing drugs to about 20 major leaguers, including Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Braun. Puello, who is on the Mets? 40-man roster, is the only Met whose name has been linked to the clinic, and could be hit with a suspension as long as 100 games.
When asked about the situation, Puello simply replied: ?I only have to play. I came here to the U.S. to play baseball, that?s what I have to do. Be positive, play hard and play baseball. That?s what I know.?

Clover-shaped clumps of charged particles extend billions of kilometers

The solar system drags along a lengthy, twisted tail as it moves through the galaxy, researchers announced July 10 in a press conference and in the Astrophysical Journal.
Scientists had always presumed that a tail existed, said Eric Christian, an astronomer at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. ?But this is the first time we have data that tells us about the tail.?
The discovery comes from data gathered by the Interstellar Boundary Explorer, or IBEX, a satellite launched in 2008. It charts the trajectories of speedy atoms that originate in the outskirts of the solar system before getting an inward kick from collisions with charged particles from the sun. The distribution of those atoms helps scientists map the boundaries of the heliosphere, the bubble that contains the planets and other material in the solar system and is inflated by particles continually jetting out from the sun.
A cross section of the tail resembles a four-leaf clover, with two clumps of slow-moving solar particles and two of high-speed particles. The data also reveal that the clover shape is flattened and twisted by galactic magnetic fields acting on the sun as it whizzes through the Milky Way at around 84,000 kilometers per hour ? the same magnetic fields that cause ribbons of charged particles to wrap around the edge of the heliosphere (SN 11/21/09, p. 15).
The IBEX team could not determine the exact length of the tail, said principal investigator David McComas of Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, but estimated it at 150 billion kilometers, or 1,000 times the distance between Earth and the sun. The team plans to see whether the tail?s shape changes as the sun?s activity wanes.

If someone were to tell me that the New York Yankees were to go 6-1 in the last week after the week they had ?previously, I would have thought they were crazy. But as good a week as it was, that last game against the Orioles really hurt. Speaking as a fan here and not a journalist, I would rather see the Yankees lose in any other way than via a Mariano Rivera blown save. Ugh. The pits. That was brutal. And the thing about that Adam Jones homer was that, not only was it poor execution by Rivera on the pitch, but it was bad strategy by the battery as a whole. Jones will swing at everything, so to throw him strikes is?well?you saw the results.
All in all, it was a good week. So what will this week bring? Let?s take a look in this latest version of ?This week in Yankees baseball.?
The first bit of good news is that the Yankees are at home at Yankee Stadium all week. The second bit of good news is that they play four games against the Royals and three against the Twins. These are two teams that give the boys from the Bronx plenty of chances to win. The Royals should pose more of a problem than the Twins, but still. The Yankees have made their living over the years beating teams like this.
The one problem is that the Yankees have not had an off day in like forever. That is hard on a pitching staff and hard on a bullpen. As good as Joe Girardi is at handling the latter, all it takes is a couple of tough games to break it all apart. Even so, the Yankees got a bit of a boost this past week with the return of Eduardo Nunez (as weird as that sounds). And it is a very good thing that Girardi is playing Zoilo Almonte every day. Vernon Wells is best used in small doses.
As the Royals come to town, the first game features Jeremy Guthrie for the Royals against Phil Hughes of the Yankees. Hughes has had two good outings in a row. Will that continue? Or will be go back to grinding our teeth watching him pitch? Guthrie can cobble together a really good game every once in a while. He has some skills. The Yankees will need to get to him early and Hughes needs to keep the Royals offense down and in the park.
On Tuesday, it will be CC Sabathia against James Shields. In theory, these are each team?s best pitcher. Shields has not been as good as the Royals hoped and he has been plagued by the long ball like he was a few years back. The Yankees would not mind if that trend continued this week. The weather is getting warmer and Sabathia is getting tougher. Despite all the talk about him not being the same pitcher, he has nine wins against six losses and a Sabathia start is a chance to win a ballgame.
Wednesday is enigma versus enigma as Ivan Nova pitches?after his brilliant last outing?against Wade Davis. Davis is like Hughes and the two could be twins. In fact, seeing Hughes and Davis on the same field will prove to me once and for all that they are not the same person. The bottom line is that both Davis and Hughes are better suited for the bullpen. Anyway, Nova finally gave us an insight into why the Yankees need him to put his considerable skills together because when he does, it is really quite a show.
The series finale on Thursday will feature Andy Pettitte against Ervin Santana. Santana?s problem the last two seasons have been the home run ball. That being the case, catching him at Yankee Stadium could be fun for the Yankees. Pettitte was a little better in his last start, but he has not been really sharp since early in the season and that has to be a bit of a concern for the Yankees.
The Twins come to town on Friday and that has long been good news for the Yankees. The Yankees just swept them for four games this past week in Minnesota. So you would think it would be a good thing to face them in the Bronx.
Other than Scott Diamond pitching on Friday, the rest of the weekend pitching lines for the Twins and the Yankees have not been announced. It would seem logical for Hiroki Kuroda to pitch on Friday as it would be his turn followed by Hughes and Sabathia, but given the workload lately, it would not be a surprise to see a guest appearance by a starter here. Could we see Michael Pineda for a game? Wouldn?t that be fun!
It really does not matter who the Twins pitch. They are all the same as low strikeout, low walk guys with minimal stuff and a reliance on getting batted balls to find gloves in the field. It is this strategy, which has been an organizational one, that, in my opinion, has sunk the Twins more than any other reason for the past three years. We are in a strikeout world and pitching to contact is not a market inefficiency.
The Yankees should win three of four from the Royals and no less than two of three from the Twins. Anything less than a 5-2 week would be a major disappointment and not taking advantage of teams the Yankees should beat.
A major question will be if we will see Derek Jeter by the end of the week. And if so, what will that bring to the table? IIATMS writers will be tackling that subject today, so there is no need to delve into it here. Speaking again as a fan, it would be fun to see him again. As a journalist, Jeter?s return brings nothing but questions.
Have a great Yankees week!

SAN FRANCISCO/SEOUL (Reuters) - The pilot of the crashed Asiana plane at San Francisco airport was still "in training" for the Boeing 777 when he attempted to land the aircraft under supervision on Saturday, the South Korean airline said.
Lee Kang-kuk, whose anglicized name was released for the first time on Monday and differed slightly from earlier usage, was the second most junior pilot of four on board the Asiana Airlines aircraft and had 43 hours' experience flying the long-range jet, the airline said on Monday.
The plane's crew tried to abort the descent less than two seconds before it hit a seawall on the landing approach to the airport, bounced along the tarmac and burst into flames.
It was Lee's first attempt to land a 777 at San Francisco, although he had flown there 29 times previously on different types of aircraft, said South Korean transport ministry official Choi Seung-youn. Earlier, the ministry said he had accumulated a total of 9,793 flying hours, including his 43 at the controls of the 777.
Two teenage Chinese girls on their way to summer camp in the United States were killed and more than 180 injured in the crash, the first fatal accident involving the Boeing 777 since it entered service in 1995.
The plane crashed after the crew tried to abort the landing with less than two seconds to go, according to the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board on Sunday.
Asiana said Lee Kang-kuk was in the pilot seat during the landing, although it was not clear whether the senior pilot, Lee Jung-min, who had clocked up 3,220 hours on a Boeing 777, had tried to take over to abort the landing.
"It's a training that is common in the global aviation industry. All responsibilities lie with the instructor captain," Yoon Young-doo, the president and CEO of the airline, told a news conference on Monday at the company headquarters.
Information collected from the plane's cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder indicated that there were no signs of trouble until seven seconds before impact, when the crew tried to accelerate, NTSB Chairwoman Deborah Hersman told reporters at San Francisco airport on Sunday.
A stall warning, in which the cockpit controls begin to shake, activated four seconds before impact, and the crew tried to abort the landing and initiate what is known as a "go around" maneuver 1.5 seconds before crashing, Hersman said.
"Air speed was significantly below the target air speed" of 137 knots, she said. The throttle was set at idle as the plane approached the airport and the engines appeared to respond normally when the crew tried to gain speed in the seconds before the crash, Hersman added.
TRAGIC TWIST
In a tragic new twist, the San Francisco Fire Department said that one of the Chinese teenagers may have been run over by an emergency vehicle as first responders scrambled to the scene.
"One of the deceased did have injuries consistent with those of having been run over by a vehicle," fire department spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said.
The two, Ye Mengyuan and Wang Linjia, were classmates and friends from the same middle school in Quzhou, in the prosperous eastern coastal province of Zhejiang, and had been going to the United States to attend summer camp.
Ye, 16, had an easy smile, was an active member of the student council and had a passion for biology, the Beijing News reported.
"Responsible, attentive, pretty, intelligent," were the words written about her on a recent school report, it added.
Wang, a year older than Ye, was also known as a good student and was head of her class, the newspaper said.
The two girls were among a group of 30 students and five teachers from Jiangshan Middle School on their way to attend the summer camp, the official Xinhua news agency said.
More than 30 people remained hospitalized late on Sunday. Eight were listed in critical condition, including two with paralysis from spinal injuries, according to hospital officials.
The charred hulk of the aircraft remained on the airport tarmac as flight operations gradually returned to normal. Three of the four runways were operating by Sunday afternoon.
Hersman said it was too early to speculate on the cause of the crash. The data recorders corroborated witness accounts and an amateur video, shown by CNN, that indicated the plane came in too low, lifted its nose in an attempt to gain altitude, and then bounced violently along the tarmac after the rear of the aircraft clipped a seawall at the approach to the runway.
Asked whether the information reviewed by the NTSB showed pilot error in the crash, Hersman did not answer directly.
"What I will tell you is that the NTSB conducts very thorough investigations. We will not reach a determination of probable cause in the first few days that we're on an accident scene," she told reporters.
Asiana said mechanical failure did not appear to be a factor. Hersman confirmed that a part of the airport's instrument-landing system was offline on Saturday as part of a scheduled runway construction project, but cautioned against drawing conclusions from that.
"You do not need instruments to get into the airport," she said, noting that the weather was good at the time of the crash and the plane had been cleared for a visual approach.
The Asiana flight was flying to San Francisco from Seoul with 291 passengers and 16 crew members on board. Several large groups of Chinese students were among the passengers.
The passengers included 141 Chinese, 77 South Koreans, 64 Americans, three Indians, three Canadians, one French, one Vietnamese and one Japanese citizen.
SERIOUS INTERIOR DAMAGE
People on the flight said nothing seemed amiss until moments before the crash. Pictures taken by survivors showed passengers hurrying out of the wrecked plane, some on evacuation slides. Thick smoke billowed from the fuselage and TV footage showed the aircraft gutted by fire. Much of its roof was gone.
Interior damage to the plane also was extreme, Hersman said on CNN earlier on Sunday.
"You can see the devastation from the outside of the aircraft, the burn-through, the damage to the external fuselage," she said. "But what you can't see is the damage internally. That is really striking."
The NTSB released photos showing the wrecked interior cabin with oxygen masks dangling from the ceiling.
Hersman said the first emergency workers to arrive at the scene included 23 people in nine vehicles. San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee said a total of 225 first responders were involved.
"As chaotic as the site was yesterday, I think a number of miracles occurred to save many more lives," Lee said at the airport news conference. Appearing later at San Francisco General Hospital, he declined to address whether one of the Chinese teenagers may have been run over.
It was the first fatal commercial airline accident in the United States since a regional plane operated by Colgan Air crashed in New York in 2009.
Asiana, South Korea's junior carrier, has had two other fatal crashes in its 25-year history.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) ? A national gun industry group on Monday filed the latest lawsuit challenging Connecticut's new wide-ranging gun law, passed in the wake of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.
The National Shooting Sports Foundation Inc., which is based in Newtown a few miles from Sandy Hook, claims the emergency legislation was illegally passed in April without proper public input, time for adequate review by members of the General Assembly, or a statement of facts explaining why lawmakers needed to bypass the usual legislative process.
"There was no emergency and so there's no statement of facts as to why this is an emergency," Lawrence G. Keane, the foundation's senior vice president and general counsel, told The Associated Press, arguing the public's federal and state constitutional due process rights were therefore violated. "There was truly no emergency other than a political one."
Keane said the foundation wants a U.S. District Court judge to strike down the law as invalid, prohibiting it from being enforced. Many parts of the legislation have already taken effect, such as an expanded ban on guns considered to be assault weapons and a ban on large-capacity ammunition magazines.
"The correct, legally required process was not followed," Keane said.
Susan Kinsman, a spokeswoman for Attorney General George Jepsen, said the office had not yet been served with the complaint as of Monday afternoon and therefore could not comment.
Connecticut's bill originally stemmed from a legislative task force charged with reviewing the state's gun laws, mental health care and school security following the Dec. 14 school shooting that left 20 first graders and six educators dead. Those recommendations were passed on to the top leaders of the General Assembly, both Democrats and Republicans, who ultimately crafted a compromise bill behind closed doors that was presented to the rank-and-file lawmakers on April 1.
The final bipartisan, 139-page bill ? designated as "emergency certified" and therefore bypassing public hearings and committee votes ? received final legislative approval early April 4. It passed 26-10 in the Senate and 105-44 in the House of Representatives. Both were bipartisan votes. Gov. Dannel Malloy, a Democrat, signed the bill into law the same day.
Malloy, House Speaker Brendan Sharkey, Senate President Donald Williams Jr., and other state officials are named as the defendants in the lawsuit, which is the third challenge to the state's new gun law but the first to accuse the legislature and governor of violating the law in order to pass it.
In March, a group of Connecticut organizations that support gun rights, pistol permit holders and gun sellers filed a lawsuit claiming, among other things, the assault weapons and large-capacity magazine bans violate their rights to bear arms and to equal protection under the law. A month earlier, a New London resident filed a suit on behalf of the Disabled Americans for Firearms Rights, arguing the new law infringes on the rights of people with disabilities to protect themselves.
Jepsen said in March that his office believes the legislation, considered among the strictest in the nation, is lawful and that his office was prepared to defend it against any court challenges.
The National Shooting Sports Foundation is a nonprofit entity that represents the interests of more than 9,500 federally licensed firearms manufacturers, distributors and retailers, as well as companies that manufacture, distribute and sell shooting and hunting-related goods and services. The foundation also represents sportsmen's associations, gun clubs and shooting ranges.

ALGIERS | Mon Jul 8, 2013 6:26am BST
ALGIERS (Reuters) - Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika is expected to leave hospital in Paris and return to Algeria soon, a source close to the presidency told Reuters on Monday.
Bouteflika was rushed to hospital in France on April 27 after a stroke.
The 76-year-old has ruled the North African oil and gas producer since 1999. He is part of an older generation of leaders who have dominated politics in a former French colony that supplies a fifth of Europe's natural gas imports and cooperates with the West in combating Islamist militancy.
Authorities have released little information about his stay in France. In an apparent move to quell speculation about his health, Bouteflika appeared on state television on June 12 meeting his prime minister and army chief of staff at the Institution Nationale des Invalides in Paris.
Algeria has been run with Soviet-style secrecy for decades by an elite drawn largely from men who fought in the war of independence against France from 1954 to 1962.
U.S. diplomatic cables leaked in 2011 said Bouteflika had been suffering from cancer but it was in remission.

Much of this you may have read here before, but it is worth repeating because the dramatic distortion in oil prices over the past weeks and their potential impact on the economy is becoming acute, and nothing is being done about it.
Some two weeks ago the Federal Trade Commission announced that it will open a probe on suspected oil price-fixing. We wish them God speed. In the past fortnight the price of oil has spiked some 10 percent in spite of the countervailing realities that would ordinarily militate against the precipitous rise in price that has taken place, realities such as:
Yes, of course there are the geopolitical concerns attendant to Egypt and the Suez Canal, which has been seized upon by the oil traders/gamblers as a pivotal rationalization for the current extraordinary spike in oil prices. Yet a clear reading on the ramifications of a Suez Canal closure is rarely, if ever, laid out.
Some 5 percent of seaborne crude oil passes through the Suez Canal. Not inconsiderable, but its potential cost can be clearly calculated. The closure of Suez would not stop the lifting and shipping of oil cargos. It would however add approximately 16 days steaming time around Cape Horn to an oil cargo's sea voyage otherwise precluded from using the canal.
In the shipping lexicon, the maximum size of an oil tanker that can transit Suez is known in the trade as a "Suezmax" class carrier. Its typical deadweight is some 240,000 tonnes. Calculating a per diem charter rate for a 'Suezmax' carrier at $50,000/day or $800,000 per voyage (actually much less as there is a massive overhang of idle tankers currently steeply depressing charter rates). Thus the additional cost of transporting a cargo of crude oil of 1.7 million barrels (240,000 tonnes x the 7.1 barrels of crude oil per tonne) around the Cape would be an additional 47 cents per barrel (1.7mm/barrels divided into $800,000 per voyage cost), a far cry from the near $9.00/bbl per barrel increase in price for oil chalked up on the commodity exchanges this past fortnight. A brazen example of how the 'oiligopoly' trumpets information, real or otherwise, to delude an unsuspecting public into accepting unquestioningly outrageous, basically unwarranted movements in the price of oil and its products, gasoline, heating oil, diesel and on.
To fully appreciate the excesses of the oil market one needs to understand that some 80 percent of all contracts bought and sold on the commodity exchanges are not executed by actual producers or crude oil consumers engaged in 'legitimate' hedging strategies, but rather by speculators comme gamblers trying to drive the price of oil in the direction in which they have placed their bets.
This open chicanery has cost end consumers (those paying for these excesses at the gas pump in the billions of dollars) to the enormous profit of the gamblers, from individual players, the oil trading desks of the bank holding companies, the trading desks of many of the oil companies themselves, and the physical oil commodity trading houses speculating on their own behalf or possibly on behalf of those who have an interest in ever higher oil prices.
For reasons ranging from lack of understanding or worse, our government has been totally acquiescent to these manipulations by the 'oiligopoly. As prime example The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) was given the authority by virtue of a January 2010 rider to the Commodity Exchange Act, to implement speculative position limits for futures and option contracts of certain energy commodities such as crude oil. To date, no action has been taken by the CFTC other than interminable hearings which one can well imagine have become a cover for the total lack of meaningful process.
In April 2011 the president amidst great fanfare, focused on 'speculation' in the oil market, giving Attorney General Eric Holder a mandate to investigate and announcing the formation of 'The Oil and Gas Price Fraud Working Group.' To date, more than two years later, not a word has been heard from this august commission.
Further the administration has been irresponsible, to the point of being supportive (please see "The Price of Gasoline and Our Patently Absurd Application of Our Sovereign Immunity Law") of sovereign immunity extended to OPEC national oil companies and the massive refining facilities owned by them in the United States, oblivious to their inexorable influence on the pricing of domestic crude oil.
The facilities include the Motiva Refinery at Port Arthur, Texas, the largest refinery in the country owned 50 percent by Saudi Arabia's national oil company and OPEC member SaudiAramco and 50 percent by Aramco's partner in their SASREF refinery in Jubail, Saudi Arabia, Royal Dutch Shell.
In addition there are the important refineries and facilities in Houston and Corpus Christie, Texas; Lamont, Illinois; Lake Charles and Chalmette Louisiana; Savannah Ga.; St.Croix and the Virgin Islands all operated by Citgo, the U.S. subsidiary of the Venezuelan national oil company PDVSA. PDVSA is a charter member of OPEC, and through Citgo's American facilities, processing more than a million barrels per day in the United States.
All told it would appear that the 'oiligopoly' has us in their grip. Yet there is a halting ray of sunshine in the announcement on June 25th that the "Federal Trade Commmission Said to Open Probe of Oil Price Fixing After EU."
Will it be a serious and searching probe of the malevolent formation of prices in the oil industry, costing American and world consumers billions, or just a cursory headline in the manner of the now discredited 'The Oil and Gas Price Fraud Working Group.' Time will tell of course, but it would be a powerful incentive if the press and public would hold the FTC and our elected officials to account.

If you want to live longer and be healthy you should develop a routine to keep it that way. Fitness is an important part of anyone?s life because it wards off illness and creates a more balanced body and mind. Keep reading to learn how to become healthier and look better with some simple steps.
Do you think that you are too busy to stay fit? Separate workouts into 2 sessions. You do not have to increase the amount of time you are working out, just divide it in two. As an example, instead of jogging for an entire hour, jog for a half-hour in the early morning and then for another half-hour later on in the day. You can do two different types of workouts if you want, which will help to keep things fresh.
In order to avoid hitting the fitness center twice in the same day, you might try getting one workout in at the fitness center and then doing another one elsewhere.
Get creative with your new fitness routine. There are lots of fun activities that can be done outside the gym. You need to stay motivated, and doing something you enjoy is a good idea, especially if you are new to fitness.
Always keep some spice in your exercises and throw in a few new workouts whenever you come across a good idea. This helps to avoid boredom from too much repetition and will also maintain your level of motivation. Furthermore, as the muscle groups get used to certain types of movements, you need to make changes to keep seeing results.
Explore creative options when coming up with a fitness plan. You do not have to go to the gym to exercise. This will help you stay motivated by finding an activity you truly enjoy.
Most people need motivation to stay on their diet program, so they have to see and feel the results in order to keep going. Instead of relying on the scales, let your clothes tell you when you?re changing. You will know how much you are changing if you make a habit of trying these clothes on from time to time.
Crunches alone won?t help you build abs. A university study has shown that it takes a quarter million crunches to burn a single pound of fat. So, if your only workout is crunches, you end up cheating yourself. Use other exercises to get the best results on your abs.
Make sure you clean all fitness equipment before you begin your workout. Just imagine all of the microscopic organisms that previous users could have left there. You are going to the gym to increase your overall health not to endanger it.
Many people mistakenly believe that it is okay to work out their abdominal muscles every single day. In fact, daily ab workouts are not the best way to exercise this muscle group. As with other muscles, abdominals need a break between exercise. Wait two or three days between each ab workout.
Investing in a personal trainer is a wise investment if you can afford it. A personal trainer will offer insight in addition to the motivation you need to keep working at an exercise routine. Although not for everyone, a personal trainer can make a big impact.
A good fitness routine to help build firm calf muscles is by doing donkey style calf raises. These calf raises are an awesome way to effectively build up your calves when you?re exercising. Have another person sit down on your back, then raise your calves.
One great way to become physically fit is by rollerblading. While rollerblading is not as popular as in the past, it remains an excellent method of burning calories. You can still find rollerblades in most sporting goods stores.
When starting a fitness program, make sure you take it slowly, initially. It is important to concentrate on learning breathing techniques and correct form. Once you have all this stuff down, it will help you work out safer and better in the future.
Keep a fitness diary showing what you did during your day. By recording data you will ensure that you push it as much as possible. Buy a pedometer that you can use to track how many steps you take each day and include that in your record, also. Keeping a written record of fitness activities can help you gauge your progress while working to achieve your goals.
You can show your children that fitness is important by volunteering for fitness programs offered through their school. This may actually encourage them to get more involved.
It?s a good idea to check in with your physician before you launch an ambitious (or even a more modest) fitness routine. Your doctor will know if exercising is right for you and which ones are best for you. Even if you feel like you?re already as fit as you can be, a doctor will be able to give you good advice on how to proceed.
Scheduling yourself for a daily dose of exercise is a great way to improve your fitness. This way you can burn more calories in the same amount of time. It also means that you will get in a workout routine. On some days though, it is best to work out in moderation in order to not put too much stress on your body.
You need to have good footwear when you are working out. Doing many kinds of exercises with inappropriate footwear can put you at risk for a lot of different injuries, some of them quite serious. If you use the wrong shoes, your feet may hurt, discouraging you from continuing. Give yourself the best chance at success with the right shoes.
Are you fat? Give jumping rope a try! A jump rope is super portable, so it can easily be used anywhere?home, the gym, work, or a hotel. One minute of jumping rope burns about the same number of calories as doing three minutes of many other cardio exercises. This means you can jump rope for 10 minutes ? with practice ? and enjoy the same calorie burn and benefits of a 30-minute workout!
As important as being fit is, most people believe that they will not see results in weeks. This is far from the truth! Small things like increasing your water consumption and adding in a bit of daily exercise can have big results. Use the tips you just read and commit to a fitness program and you will see a difference.
Do you want to make your workouts super effective? Stretching can help you build strength for up to 20 percent. Take 20-30 seconds to stretch any muscles involved after each exercise you do. A simple addition like stretches can really enhance your workout.

Republican Senator John McCain called for a suspension of U.S. military aid to Egypt after the army ouster of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi, breaking with the official position in Washington.
"I've thought long and hard about this, but I believe that we have to suspend the aid to the Egyptian military, because the Egyptian military has overturned the vote of the people of Egypt," McCain said Friday evening at a press conference in his home state of Arizona.
"We cannot repeat the same mistakes we made at other times in our history by supporting the removal of freely elected governments," the 2008 presidential candidate said.
"So I believe that the aid has to be suspended, that the Egyptian military has to set a timetable for elections and new Constitution, and then we should evaluate whether to continue the aid or not.
"And I am aware that by suspending aid to the Egyptian military, which is the only stable institution in Egypt, we are risking further problems in the Sinai, and in other areas of cooperation with the Egyptian military," McCain said.
"I say that with great reluctance, but the United States of America I think must learn the lessons of history and that is: we cannot stand by without acting in cases where freely elected governments are unseated by the military arm of those nations," he concluded.
His position sets him apart from the views adopted by several other Congressmen and by President Barack Obama, who, in his sole statement on the situation, avoided using the word "coup."
American law requires all military and economic aid be suspended when a government is overturned by the military.
Obama, so far, has simply said the U.S. administration is "deeply concerned" by the turn of events, adding he has ordered a review of "the implications under U.S. law for our assistance to the government of Egypt."
The U.S. gives some $1.3 billion in military aid each year to the Egyptian army.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- The U.S. work force added 195,000 jobs in June while the national unemployment rate remained unchanged at 7.6%, the Labor Department said Friday.
The June jobs growth beat expectations as economists polled by Thomson Reuters anticipated nonfarm payrolls to add 165,000 jobs and expected the unemployment rate to dip to 7.5%.
The report upwardly revised May payrolls to 195,000 from 175,000, and April jobs to 199,000 from 149,000. Jobs have grown an average of 182,000 a month over the prior 12 months. Many investors pay closer attention to the prior-revised monthly payrolls as they provide more refined numbers.
Average hourly earnings rose by 10 cents to $24.01. The average work week for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls remained unchanged at 34.5 hours. >Contact by Email.Sweetest Day optimal Samantha Steele Espn goog Sylvia Kristel st louis cardinals Steelers Schedule
Huawei?s brand new Ascend P6 smartphone is available now in the UK ? and this isn?t a surprise at all, because we knew it was going to be released there in early July.
You can buy the handset for less than previously reported. That?s as long as you?re getting it from Talk Talk, which is offering it for free on plans starting at ?20 per month. What?s more, for a limited time Talk Talk is also throwing in a free Huawei MediaPad Lite tablet with the Ascend P6.
Of course, you can also opt to buy the Ascend P6 on contracts from other networks. Carphone Warehouse has various offers, starting from free at ?21 monthly.
SIM-free, the new Ascend can be bought for slightly over ?300.
Running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, the Huawei Ascend P6 is very thin (only 6.2mm), and features: a 4.7 inch HD display, Dolby Digital Plus sound, 8MP rear camera, 5MP front-facing camera, Huawei K3V2 quad-core processor (1.5GHz), 2GB of RAM, 8GB of internal memory, MicroSD card support, and a 2,000 mAh battery.
In (somehow) related news, if you want a smaller, way smaller Android device, Sony has recently introduced the SmartWatch 2. This could be available in the UK starting July 15. Retailer Clove is asking ?120 for the wearable accessory, saying it should have it in stock that day.

Kate Mizerski was an ace when it came to the theoretical side of running a small business; however she had no first hand experience in the area - a realisation that prompted her to take on a Salsa?s Fresh Mex Grill franchise.
Armed with a PHD in marketing, Kate left behind her career as a lecturer in small business marketing and opened her first Salsa?s store in August 2011.
Almost two years later, she runs two successful stores, one in Mt Lawley and the other in Booragoon, Western Australia.
?For 20 years I had been teaching students how to run a business but I had never really done so myself. ?
?Moving out of my comfort zone of being in front of a class was a bit daunting so I thought it best to go with a franchise as it would give me a tried and tested model and I?d have a team to turn to for help and support,? she says.
WHY SALSA'S??
US born Kate decided on Salsa?s because she loves Mexican fare, and when she first moved to Australia 17 years ago she was disappointed by the lack of venues that offered the food.
?I grew up eating Mexican so it was a cuisine I really missed as an eat-out option. When my family and I first started discussing options, the first thing that came to mind was Mexican.
?I didn?t want to go the Taco Bell route for a number of reasons, so I started doing some research and came across Salsa?s. There were already two in WA so I staked them out, tried the food, watched the customers and decided it was the one for me,? she explains.
A TYPICAL DAY
Kate says her days have changed markedly since she took on her second store. ?Now I divide my time between the two, although the new store gets the majority of my physical presence.
?I believe that for a store to succeed, you have to be fully involved. I work in store five to six days a week and roster myself on as a regular person - this means doing everything from working the register and making the food to talking with customers (my favourite) and cleaning.?
Kate also devotes a portion of her time to administrative tasks, and she always makes an effort to spend quality time with her children.
?During quiet time I catch up on paperwork and do forward planning. I have two high school aged children so I aim to be home at least three afternoons a week to spend time with them and to keep a ?normal? family life,? she adds.
TRAINING AND SUPPORT?
Kate says Salsa?s initial training was second to none, and the brand?s ongoing support and training has helped her achieve a number of business goals.
?I loved the training; it introduced me to all aspects of the business and made me feel comfortable making decisions.
?The ongoing support and training is also useful in keeping the business vibrant and on a growth trajectory.?
LOCAL AREA MARKETING?
Kate believes it is vital business owners engage with their local communities, and as such both her stores are involved in a range of community based initiatives.?
?I strongly believe that if you are going to be successful, you have to embrace your community and act as a member so it becomes a relationship where you are viewed as part of the community and not solely as a business out to get customer?s money.?
?In the food court location, I support local sporting teams by providing ?player of the week? certificates. As someone who has been a recipient (via my kids? sport), I know that if a child has a gift certificate, it is likely the parent is going to go and sample the food as well.
?My other store is fast casual and it is located in a vibrant community with strong community groups. I have also involved myself with the local retailer group and organised neighbourhood events," she explains.?
GOALS?
Kate is a high achiever, and she is willing to work the hard yards to ensure her stores perform to the best of their ability.
?I want to make it the number one business in the state, and to make it consistently in the top 10 in the country.
?I want to provide an outstanding experience so people come back and tell their friends to come back. With a franchise, you?re in for the long haul - you have to build on what you have and work to your strengths. I think my strengths are people skills and providing outstanding product. If I can convey this to my customers, I will reach my goal of being number one,? she explains.
THE FRANCHISEE EXPERIENCE?
Kate says franchising has changed her life in more ways than one, and she believes it is the best career move she has ever made. ?It is never dull, always challenging and always fun (although sometimes very tiring!)," she says.?
Kate explains those close to her agree franchising has had a positive impact on her life, and she is fond of the fact that no day is ever the same. ?
?My family comments how much happier I seem since starting this business. I have the comfort of knowing I have a strong support network behind me, a strong brand and that there is tremendous growth potential.
?I wake up every day and wonder what the day will bring. I tell my team members (who are all young gamers), this is like a game - our goal is to win, and to do that we need to provide the best customer experience - winning provides rewards for all."?

In order for their breath to have the actual capacity to reflect light, the band had to shoot at below freezing temperatures, and considering the medium, the animations come out with surprising clarity. Thanks to the natural irregularities in the bands' breathing, there are some incredible effects that take place and lend the animations a wonderfully human quality. You can see how the group actually went about making the video below.
But one of the greatest things about a technique like this is that, seemingly, these animations would be just as lovely in person as they are post-edit.

ANDREW ASHCRAFT: AN ATHLETIC GO-GETTER
Prescott High School physical education teacher and coach Lou Beneitone taught many of the Hotshots, and remembered 29-year-old Andrew Ashcraft as a fitness-oriented student.
"He had some athletic ability in him and he was a go-getter, too. You could pretty much see, from young freshman all the way, he was going to be physically active."
Beneitone said athletic prowess was a must for the Hotshots. "That's what it takes. You gotta be very physically fit, and you gotta like it, gotta like the hard work."
Ashcraft, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was honored to be a member of the Hotshot crew, and "he just had a really sweet spirit about him," Elise Smith, a Prescott, Ariz., resident, told The Deseret News of Salt Lake City.
Ashcraft left behind a wife, Juliann, and four children, the newspaper reported.
ROBERT CALDWELL: THE SMART ONE
Friends characterized Robert Caldwell, 23, as the smart man in the bunch.
"He was really smart, he had a good sense of humor," said Chase Madrid, worked as a Hotshot for two years, but sat this year out.
"He was one of the smart guys in the crew who could get the weather, figure out the mathematics. It was just natural for him," Madrid said.
It was Caldwell's intelligence and know-how that got him appointed as a squad boss.
"Bob was a really good friend," added Gina Martinez, who knew many of the Hotshots.
___
TRAVIS CARTER: STRONG AND HUMBLE
At Captain Crossfit, a gym near the firehouse where the Hotshots were stationed, Travis Carter was known as the strongest one out of the crew ? but also the most humble.
"No one could beat him," trainer Janine Pereira said. "But the thing about him, was he would never brag about it. He would just kill everyone and then go and start helping someone else finish."
Carter, 31, was famous for once holding a plank for 45 minutes, and he was notorious for making up brutal workouts.
The crew recently did a five mile run during wilderness training, then he made them go to Captain Crossfit in the afternoon for another really hard workout.
"The other guys who came in here always said that even though he was in charge, he was always the first one at the fire, the first one in action," Pereira said.
___
DUSTIN DEFORD: DRY SENSE OF HUMOR
Dustin DeFord, 24, tried out for the Hotshot crew in January 2012, telling friends on Twitter that he had passed the physical fitness test and asking for prayers as he moved on to the interview stage of the process.
He moved to Arizona from Montana after he was hired, and he worked to improve his skills on the climbing wall at a gym near the firehouse.
"He listened very well. He was very respectful," said Tony Burris, a trainer at Captain Crossfit. "He kind of had a dry sense of humor."
Another trainer, Janine Pereira, echoed that sentiment.
"You would say something to him, and he would respond with a crack, which was funny because he was so shy," she said.

CHAPTER ONE ? THE BOY WHO LIVED
Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. They were the last people you?d expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn?t hold with such nonsense. Mr. Dursley was the director of a firm called Grunnings, which made drills. He was a big, beefy man with hardly any neck, although he did have a very large mustache. Mrs. Dursley was thin and blonde and had nearly twice the usual amount of neck, which came in very useful as she spent so much of her time craning over garden fences, spying on the neighbors. The Dursleys had a small son called Dudley and in their opinion there was no finer boy anywhere. The Dursleys had everything they wanted, but they also had a secret, ?
The beginning of ?Harry Potter and the?Harry Potter and the Philosopher?s Stone? by J. K. Rowling
A couple of years ago I created a ?friendship book? in the style of the Harry Potter series. Yup, I love ?Harry Potter?, at least the first few books, and I thought: ?Let?s ignore all the crappy merchandising stuff, how would a ?friendship book? look like?? Given that I had an?Hewlett-Packard print studio CD (came with the ink cartridges of my Inkjet printer) with some nice house and Hogwarts logos, I went to work.
I went for a self-bound book ? something that the students might have used. But I was not satisfied with it. The cover was clad in velvet and while velvet is nice, I thought that leather might be more suiting. But leather is expensive, especially high quality leather, nothing I could afford while being a student with no real income (despite working 19 hours a week in addition to full-time studying).
So I created a few books with a velvet cover (bound them myself), but the idea stayed in my mind and nagged me ? leather would have been nice. It staying in my head until a few weeks ago when I thought: ?Hey, I?ve got a job (for the moment) that pays a decent wage (for the moment), why not order some nice leather and recreate the address book??
So I did. I ordered some nice leather from ?Lederkram.de? (a German shop that caters mostly to the LARP community, go to ?Felle, Leder & B?nder?, ?Leder?, ?f?r?, ??nach Art?, ?Velourleder?, then search for ?Velourleder VB01?, look for ?Bucheinb?nde? (= book covers)). And the leather really was nice ? I bound a new version of the address book in leather (printed by Lulu in color hardcover, still using the same images from the old image CD that came with the ink cartridges of my HP printer).
You can see some images of the address book in this gallery:
The nice thing is that it always pays to have an archive of your creative works ? with the files you used for your works. You never know when you have more options and want to reuse some images for a new or improved work.
Personally, I think while the leather looks more ? authentic, the velvet was nicer to touch, though. Still, the real leather is a vast improvement to my previous works with ?synthetic leather? in other projects. Synthetic leather just feels ? cheap, like poisonous chemicals ? but real leather ? it?s something different. Still, I?m not sure, I like leather in other contexts, but for book covers perhaps I stick with velvet ?
Still, it was worthwhile to try it out ? and it is an improvement to the prior version of my address book.

This weekend was a really good one?and I'm glad for that, because things are about to get a whole lot of crazy up in here. Moving day is just three more days away!!! We'll be transporting the babies to our new "forever home" on Thursday, July 4, as well as most or all of our apartment belongings. Movers will bring the rest of our stuff from our two giant storage units the following week. It's everything I can do not to throw all the stuff in the pantry into a box, grab the babies and their mountain of supplies and haul it on over to our new place. Course, that's all easier said then done and since I need a small army to make it happen, I'm back to watching the clock run down the hours. Tick, tock...
Saturday morning, I spent a few hours out by myself getting a pedicure and running errands and I loved every minute. I actually really enjoy going to the grocery store and I really, really enjoy going to the grocery store by myself when I don't have strict time restraints that only allow 10 minutes to find and purchase a week's worth of food!
I finally had time to do a little meal planning and so when I got back home, I grilled a steak (on my stove-top grill pan on an electric stove...be impressed!) and made some mac & cheese and green beans for our lunch. The babies munched on the exact same thing, plus a few extra snacks, and really dug into the mac & cheese. The husband and I sat at the table and ate our lunch with them, something we've been doing more and more of lately. Family meal time will definitely be a big staple in our house?our new house!
Sunday we lounged around all morning and implemented our new napping schedule. Instead of two naps at 10am and 2pm, the crew is only going down for one nap right after lunch (around noon). They've been fighting naps pretty hard and don't sleep very long, so I figured this may be the answer to our problems. We're still in the "test phase" so we'll see how it goes over the next few days!
After nap time and dosing everyone with Advil?two of the kiddos have had high fevers and two low-grade fevers as a result of their 12 month vaccines last week?we headed to Home Depot with the quads for the first time. They loved looking around at everything and I think they enjoyed sitting in their quad stroller versus their car seats that attach to the two twin stroller frames. We didn't attract a ridiculous amount of attention, a couple people tried to stop and talk but we just kept moving.
We loaded the babies through the back of the suburban since their car seats were still in place inside. Which meant, ladies and gents, that yours truly had to climb into the back seat like a spider monkey then turn and wrangle the babies over the seat as well and into their car seats. My level of flexibility is mildly impressive sometimes, even to me!!
While we'd been shopping inside, I'd fed the babies animal crackers and graham cookies, then did squeeze pouches of applesauce and a Plum Organics meal for their snack once we got back in the car. Worked out perfectly! They lulled off to sleep on our drive over to the new house so we could check on the progress and drop off a couple things. I was so happy to see the babies bedrooms painted and dry wall going up in the all the holes!
