Cash boost in bee parasite fight

Scientists are to try to turn a honey bee parasite's natural defences against itself in a bid to beat the pest.

University of Aberdeen researchers have won ?250,000 to study how to subvert the varroa mite's immune system.

The blood-sucking varroa mite is endemic in many honey bee colonies and transmits lethal viruses to the bees.

Novel ways to tackle varroa are needed because mites are becoming resistant to existing chemical treatments.

The cash will be used to extend a completed study that showed how to target specific genes used by the mite.

Potential targets

So far, said Dr Alan Bowman of the University of Aberdeen who is leading the project, this "knock-down" approach has only been used to home in on non-lethal genes.

"The next step is to continue finding which are the best genes that will kill them quickly at very low doses and then we'll move on out to field trials when we'll be working with the National Bee Unit," said Dr Bowman.

The knock-down technique attempts to trick part of the bug's immune system into thinking that one of its genes is a virus.

Typically the part of the immune system being subverted only tackles external threats in the form of a certain types of RNA-based viruses.

Resistance to a single treatment can often develop quite quickly?

End Quote Dr Alan Bowman University of Aberdeen

As active genes also use RNA, it should be possible to subvert this defence mechanism by making it think one of the genes keeping the mite living is actually an invader.

Varroa mites' genomes are being sequenced to discover which genes are being actively expressed and are potential targets.

Dr Bowman hoped to have identified likely genes by the autumn and to start small-scale trials in 2013.

Beekeepers are being asked to send in live varroa mites so the researchers have a stock of bugs on which to test candidate treatments.

Dr Bowman said it was unlikely that the research would produce a treatment that would completely rid hives of the pest.

"I do not think we are expecting any silver bullets and it's probably the wrong approach to look for them these days," he said. "It'll be another piece in the arsenal and at the moment it's a very small arsenal."

Max Watkins, technical director of Vita Europe, which is providing some of the research money, said finding treatments that kill mites but leave bees and the environment unharmed was very difficult.

"The challenge is heightened because the relatively short life cycle of the varroa mite means that resistance to a single treatment can often develop quite quickly," he said.

Honey bees, solitary bees and bumble bees play a hugely important role in pollinating crops, said Friends of the Earth as it kicked off its Bee Cause campaign.

The pressure group estimates that it would cost the UK about ?1.8bn a year to hand-pollinate crops if all bees died out.

It has called on David Cameron to back a national bee action plan that would limit urban expansion and pesticide use.

Start of 2012, March shatter US heat records

WASHINGTON (AP) ? It has been so warm in the United States this year, especially in March, that national records were not just broken, they were deep-fried.

Temperatures in the lower 48 states were 8.6 degrees (4.8 degrees Celsius) above normal for March and 6 degrees (3.3 degrees Celsius) higher than average for the first three months of the year, according to calculations by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. That far exceeds the old records.

The magnitude of how unusual the year has been in the U.S. has alarmed some meteorologists who have warned about global warming. One climate scientist said it is the weather equivalent of a baseball player on steroids, with old records obliterated.

"Everybody has this uneasy feeling. This is weird. This is not good," said Jerry Meehl, a climate scientist who specializes in extreme weather at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo. "It's a guilty pleasure. You're out enjoying this nice March weather, but you know it's not a good thing."

It's not just March.

"It's been ongoing for several months," said Jake Crouch, a climate scientist at NOAA's National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C.

Meteorologists say an unusual confluence of several weather patterns, including La Nina, was the direct cause of the warm start to 2012. While individual events cannot be blamed on global warming, Crouch said this is like the extremes that are supposed to get more frequent because of man-made climate change. Greenhouse gases come from the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and oil.

It is important to note that this unusual winter heat is mostly a North America phenomenon. Much of the rest of the Northern Hemisphere has been cold, said NOAA meteorologist Martin Hoerling.

The first quarter of 2012 broke the January-March record by 1.4 degrees (0.8 degrees Celsius). Usually records are broken by just one- or two-tenths of a degree. U.S. temperature records date from 1895.

The atypical heat goes back even further. The U.S. winter of 2010-2011 was slightly cooler than normal and one of the snowiest in recent years, but after that things started heating up. The summer of 2011 was the second warmest summer on record.

The winter that just ended, which in some places was called the year without winter, was the fourth warmest on record. Since last April, it has been the hottest 12-month stretch on record, Crouch said.

But the month where the warmth turned especially weird in the United States was March.

Normally, March averages 42.5 degrees (5.8 degrees Celsius) across the country. This year, the average was 51.1 (10.6 degrees Celsius), which is closer to the average for April. Only one other time, in January 2006, was the country as a whole that much hotter than normal for an entire month.

The "icebox of America," International Falls, Minn., saw temperatures in the 70s for five days in March, and there were only three days of below zero temperatures all month.

In March, at least 7,775 weather stations across the nation broke daily high temperature records, and another 7,517 broke records for night-time heat. Combined, that is more high temperature records broken in one month than ever before, Crouch said.

"When you look at what's happened in March this year, it's beyond unbelievable," said University of Victoria climate scientist Andrew Weaver.

NOAA climate scientist Gabriel Vecchi compared the increase in weather extremes to baseball players on steroids: You can't say an individual homer is because of steroids, but they are hit more often and the long-held records for home runs fall.

They seem to be falling far more often because of global warming, said NASA top climate scientist James Hansen. In a paper he submitted to the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and posted on a physics research archive, Hansen shows that heat extremes aren't just increasing but happening far more often than scientists thought.

What used to be a 1-in-400 hot temperature record is now a 1 in 10 occurrence, essentially 40 times more likely, said Hansen. The warmth in March is an ideal illustration of this, said Hansen, who also has become an activist in fighting fossil fuels.

Weaver, who reviewed the Hansen paper and called it "one of the most stunning examples of evidence of global warming."

Are Mobb Deep On The Verge Of A Breakup?

Havoc issues blistering series of personal attacks on Prodigy over Twitter; tweets congrats on P's 'engagement' to Rihanna.

Mobb Deep used to rap, "We're in this together, son, your beef is mines," but now there appears to be an internal battle between Havoc and Prodigy.

Early Monday morning (April 9), Hav took to Twitter and sarcastically congratulated Prodigy and Rihanna on their engagement, then made serious allegations about his rhyme partner's sexuality. It's all very strange, but sources close to Havoc confirmed with MTV News that this is no hack.

Things started to spin out of control at around 3 a.m. ET when Hav tweeted: "congrats to P @prodigymobbdeep and @rihanna for getting married soon!! @rihanna please confirm!"

There was no confirmation from the Talk That Talk singer, but that didn't stop the Grammy Award-winning producer from continuing his rant. "Prodigy abitch and I'm gonna show it, follow!! Ground breaking new," Hav wrote soon after.

Things got even more scathing when Havoc charged that his childhood friend was involved in a homosexual relationship during his three-year jail bid. "I got n---as in the jail system to to back up that prodigy was f---ing homes in jail," he wrote. "Now i will silence... and let the jails take care of the rest."

But Havoc didn't "silence," instead the temperature continued to rise as Hav posted tweets throughout the morning saying he "had to smack P" and went on to threaten Prodigy. "Next time I see u, u getting layer out, con camera."

Mobb Deep released their debut album, Juvenile Hell, in 1993 and have gone on to drop seven LPs together. Throughout their career, Mobb Deep have stood as one of the pillars of New York's street hip-hop scene. During an October 2011 episode of "RapFix Live," both Havoc and Prodigy appeared on the show and talked about their legacy as a group.

"We been through a lot of eras in hip-hop music, and every album we have the attitude like it's our first album," Prodigy said. The group planned to release their self-titled eighth LP later this year, but now the future of the duo seems to be in question.

There's still no word as to what caused the rift, but Havoc is clearly no shook one as he went on fearlessly sending out barbs. He even challenged Prodigy to a fistfight: "LET'S DO A ONE ON ONE!!!!! ME AND P!!! HE SO BUTTTT HE WILL AVOID!!!!"

The barrage continued through the a.m. and ended with Havoc tweeting, "Good morning gay P!"

Prodigy has yet to respond via Twitter and a rep for the rapper had not responded to MTV News' request for comment at press time.

What do you think of Mobb Deep's internal drama? Tell us in the comments!
