A farmer seeks justice as China?s parliament opens

Alexander F. Yuan / AP

Military delegates arrive for the opening session of the annual National People's Congress at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China on Monday.

By Eric Baculinao

BEIJING ? With massive security in Beijing during the annual National People?s Congress, it would seem like a risky time to protest in China?s capital, but for Guan Youming, it?s the best time.

Nearly 3,000 members of the ruling Communist Party gathered in the Great Hall of the People on Monday for the start of the annual meeting amid tight security throughout the city. Premier Wen Jiabao delivered his equivalent of a state-of-the-union speech to the group, setting out the government?s strategy for the coming year.

In addition to economic and military policy, a prominent goal he mentioned was the need to manage major sources of domestic discontent by protecting farmers? rights and improving rural governance.

Farmers? rights to their land ?must not be violated,? Wen told the politicians, just a day after unprecedented democratic elections in the southern Chinese village of Wukan, which has become a symbol of successful revolt against land grabs and corruption.

You would think that Wen?s words would be music to the ears of Guan, a farmer from central China who made light of his 500-mile journey to brave tight security in Beijing and expose what he claims is illegal confiscation of his land by village authorities.

But Guan was not impressed. ?I don?t necessarily believe in what the leaders says, I want to see results,? he told NBC News as he recounted his years of work to try and seek justice for his claim.

A Chinese police officer drags away a protesting woman after a flag raising ceremony on Tiananmen Square across from where the National People's Congress is held, in Beijing, China on Monday. The cause of the incident was not known but authorities have tighten security of the area around the Great Hall of the People where the annual legislature meetings are held this week.

Season of discontent
With China?s booming real estate industry, residential and land prices have skyrocketed and land disputes have become a major cause of mass protests. According to a report by Tsinghua University Professor Sun Liping last year, the number of protests, riots and strikes have doubled over the last five years to almost 500 a day.

And land grabs cause more than 65 percent of rural ?mass incidents,? or collective protest actions, according to Yu Jianrong, a leading expert on rural conflicts at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Reports have estimated that nearly 50 million Chinese farmers have lost their homes during the past 30 years of industrial and urban growth; and that some 60 million more could be further uprooted with accelerated urbanization in the next few years.

Wen promised a better deal for farmers this year, with measures to improve rural incomes and protect farmers? rights as a ?top priority.?

?Farmers? rights to the land they contract to work on, to the land on which their houses sit, and to proceeds s from collective undertakings are property rights conferred by law, and these rights must not be violated by anyone,? declared Wen during his two-
hour address.

He vowed ?better supervision? and ?regulation concerning compensation? for farmers in the course of land transfers and expropriations, in a clear signal of a government drive to address the crux of rising rural discontent.

?Airing dirty laundry in public?
??From my experience,? Guan said, ?the sweeter the words, the more false they are.?

Guan hails from the farming village of Daqiao in Hubei province, where he said local leaders have ?illegally? expropriated farmland to build government offices, commercial apartments and roads. Thousands of villagers have been affected, and many have not been adequately compensated, according to Guan, who also said that five fellow villagers have bravely joined him in Beijing to press for their case.

The last straw for Guan was when his quarter acre of farmland ? what he said was his ?only source of food? ? was taken away.? He said he sought the help of various government departments but hasn?t gotten any response.

Asked why he chose this time of tight security in Beijing during the parliament session to make his case ? when protesters and petitioners from rural provinces are routinely rounded up or forcibly returned to their villages. Guan said it was a deliberate decision to ?exert pressure on leaders.?

?We are seeking out the Western and Taiwan media to explain our plight,? he said.

?Only by doing so can we expect the leaders concerned to pay attention because they are scared of airing our dirty laundry in public,? he explained.

In order to verify Guan?s claims, NBC News reached out to Wu Mingjing, party leader of Wuxie City which oversees Guan?s village.

?No, it?s impossible to for his land to be confiscated,? said Wu. ?We have laws and regulations concerning land expropriation and compensation,? he explained, adding that he was not very clear about the details of Guan?s case.

With Guan listening to the telephone conversation, Wu suggested that the Daqiao villagers bring their case to the attention of a local party secretary, with the assurance that ?proper action? will be taken.

Guan was not so sure ? perhaps Wen?s promises would trickle down after all.

Domestic Violence in Relationships ? Blog Archive ? Not Just About ...

Last month, the NC legislature voted to put an Amendment on the May Primary ballot that would ban all state recognition of unmarried couples, with potentially devastating consequences for LGBT couples, unmarried domestic violence victims, and children of unmarried parents. Panelists include seven-term Senator Ellie Kinnaird, former Mayor of Carrboro; NC Central School of Law Professor Lydia Lavelle, former President of NCAWA and member of the Board of Alderman in Carrboro, where she and her partner are registered domestic partners; and Sharon Thompson, a former legislator and family attorney in Durham who frequently represents LGBT clients. Homeschooling with Technology ? Cheeky Magpie

I haven?t discussed homeschool in some time. We?ve got a bit of a routine down so it?s a lot more fluid than it was last year or even earlier this year. That?s the funny thing about taking on a task of such magnitude. You end up learning a lot in the process.

20120227-060827.jpg

I started keeping track of homeschool educational links in an iPad app called Pearltrees. It?s a hyperbolic linking system with an interactive link browser. It?s also available on Mac and PC though I mostly use it on the iPad. One of the things I really like about it is that it gives me the option to browse similar links. In this screen shot, you can see the related links I discovered off of my own subject of homeschool. As a result, I?ve found some great resources posted by other people. If I zoomed out I?d see hundreds more links like mine!

If you have an iPad, there?s a great must-read blog:? Apps in Education. And while I don?t use my iPad as a teacher in a traditional classroom, I find great information that fits our homeschooling lifestyle. I tend to lean more toward the productivity and reference apps over educational subjects, but that?s just how my brain works.

A friend told me about Currclick, a great site for all sorts of curriculum. It?s a must visit place for unit based Studies. I really like Hands of a Child and Intellego Unit Studies. Hands of a Child offers lapbooks for older kids on subjects like Astronomy and Botany and Intellego has in depth studies in subjects like Electricity and Magnetism and the Middle Ages. I really like the mix of reading, interactive content, videos, and hands on experiments. And I love that the content is checked regularly and links are updated. The kids don?t get bored and it?s geared toward their learning level. Curriclick?has saved me a lot of time (and stress). I can?t believe I was creating my own units not that long ago.

We have two android tablets for the boys to use for school. I load curriculum in pdf form on the tablets to save on printing out pages. using an e-reader they can bookmark, highlight, and look-up words as we work through the subject. I have a strict no games on tablets policy though. I think of the tablets as textbooks or a classroom. I want to keep the distractions out.

I don?t think I?d be as successful at homeschooling without the technology. I know some of you must be rolling your eyes, but this is where we are comfortable, in the realm of the geek. We are using these resources as tools to help us learn better. The hardest part is wading through the options to find what you want and need to help you kids learn better. And there?s no shortage of options.

Bits and Pieces From My Life: Growing Up

I've been doing a lot of thinking lately about how life is changing for our family and how our family dynamics have begun to change.? Oh, there's no major change on the horizon like moving to a new home (we did that last year) or having a baby (we did that the year before), but there are changes just the same.? Instead of being a family of babies, toddlers, and preschoolers, we are currently a family of toddlers, preschoolers, and older kids, and while having older kids is easier in so many ways, it brings its own share of insecurities.?? When we had only little ones,? I struggled with finding the time to do the simple things like shave my legs, vacuum the dining room, or return books at the library drop box.? Having to do all of those things on the same day? had the potential to send me into a panic.? Adding in extras like blogging or sewing were a luxurious bonus.? When we had only little ones, I often didn't have enough hands to go around.? There was always someone to hold, someone who needed a mouth wiped, or someone with their hands in the bag of flour.? I often got touched out.? As much as I loved baby snuggles, I still wished for a full night of sleep without tiny arms flailing out and hitting me in the face.?

Transitioning into an "older" family means that I have helpers.? When I am getting everyone ready to go out for the day, Gavin takes Benjamin to the potty and Maddie finds Alaine's shoes while I make sure the diaper bag is ready to go.? Owen holds the back door open for us like a gentleman while someone grabs Alaine's hand as she walks down the deck steps.? When we get back home, Maddie sits in the car with a sleeping toddler while I unlock the door.? Gavin hangs all the coats back on hangers and everyone tucks their own gloves back into their hats before putting them into the bin that holds our winter gear.

I am still close enough to the hard(er) days to remember how they feel, but far enough away to look at them with? perspective.? I know how tiring and draining each day can feel, but I know how much joy the weeks bring and how quickly the years pass.?

The thing is, now I'm in new territory.? Though I'm still fully entrenched in the baby years, I'm also experiencing new hard things.? Now the trials are on a mental and emotional level.? Now I listen to made-up jokes and laugh even if they don't make sense.? I have to learn not to take it personally when someone sheds tears over a math lesson or doesn't want me to call them 'cute' anymore.? Now I have to figure out whether a stern word or a hug is more effective when someone has a unwarranted meltdown.? I go to bed wondering what my kids will think of me when they grow up.? I wonder if I bark out too many orders without taking time to listen.? Now I can't even resort to spelling when my husband and I are having a private discussion in front of the kids!?

So while I readily agree that it is easier being the mom of older kids, it's harder, too.? It reminds me of my own weakness.? It reminds me that Christ says, ?My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.?? I thank God for? His grace.?

Stocks set to rise after Euro bank move

By msnbc.com news services

U.S. stocks are set to climb Wednesday after European banks absorbed more than half a trillion euros as part of an effort to stabilize the euro zone's financial system.

Banks grabbed 530 billion euros at the European Central Bank's second offering of low-cost three-year loans, fueling hopes that more credit will flow to businesses and government borrowing costs will ease further. The borrowings topped expectations.

In economic news, new data showed the economy grew a bit faster than initially thought in the fourth quarter on slightly firmer consumer and business spending, which could help to allay fears of a sharp slowdown in growth in early 2012.

Gross domestic product expanded at a 3 percent annual rate, the quickest pace since the second quarter of 2010, the Commerce Department said in its second estimate. That was a step up from the 2.8 percent pace it reported in January.

The U.S. stock market is seen adding to the previous day's gains that catapulted the Dow industrials and the S&P 500 above key levels to close at multi-year highs.

The Dow closed above 13,000 for the first time since May 2008 on Tuesday, while the S&P ended above 1,370, its May 2011 intraday high, which could entice money managers seeking to boost returns. But some analysts warned this year's rally has come in light volume, and further gains could trigger selling.

Reuters contributed to this report.
